Review: Counting Days/Create To Inspire – Exeter

This night was always going to be strange. With Lock And Key cancelling to focus on their upcoming debut album, and Counting Days taking their place as headliners. I had previously witnessed, and interviewed, Counting Days at Ghostfest in September, and they provided a good performance on what was a huge bill. This was a great opportunity to see them on our home turf with Create To Inspire.

The night’s lineup took another change, as Create To Inspire became the evening’s headliners, due to Counting Days front man facing an early start the next day. That aside, Counting Days took to the stage. Now I have to point out, this was the worst attendance that I had ever witnessed at the Cavern. Exeter (the Cavern, in particular, has a good reputation for metal shows, so this was a poor effort.

Numbers aside, Counting Days played a blinding set as if to thousands, with constant energy from all members. Every riff, every beat, every scream… heart and soul put into the band’s crushing portrayal of hardcore. Playing a mixture of previously released tracks and brand new tracks from their debut EP, the band played a solid half hour, that was deserving of a much more impressive turnout. Sad to see, but being announced for Download next year leaves them with a lot to look forward to in 2016.

So, to headline the night were Create To Inspire, a band that I had heard on the grapevine to watch out for, due to their impressive live shows. They didn’t disappoint. To an eager crowd, they took to the stage and provided an awesome show. Front man, Sean Midson, providing the lungs and energy of the set, with the majority of his 30 minutes spent stood in the middle of the Cavern with his mic stand. Definitely a passionate vocalist, and one that reminded me of Being As An Ocean’s lyricist, Joel Quartuccio. The most memorable track from the set for me being the conveniently named, ‘Counting Days’. The band have clearly established themselves, with their soundscape tearing through the small underground venue. A huge presence in such a small space. With a performance like that, I doubt we’ll have many more opportunities to see them in such a small environment.

A night with a silver lining then, and one that many should be sad to have missed. Counting Days continue to tour their debut album ‘Liberated Sounds’ and will be taking to Download 2016. Create To Inspire head to Winchester and York this weekend to close out a very successful 2015. Be sure to keep an eye out for these two in 2016.
