Review: Churchhouse Creepers – 'From Party To Apocalypse'

Cats are wee evil bastards, all cute and cuddly, ‘look at me, I can let myself in and out’, all the while, plotting to take over the world. I don’t recall a Bond villain sitting stroking a dog on his lap, eh ? For instance, take the gigantic cat on the mesmeric album sleeve from Icelandic trio Churchhouse Creepers. Not just content with being gigantic, the bastard has laser beams coming out of his eyes as he crashes through buildings causing panic and mayhem. Like I said… Evil!

‘From Party To Apocalypse’ is nine tracks of fuzzy stoner rock, that at times echoes Kyuss, Queens of The Stone Age, and early Kings Of Leon (before they pussied out). The trio from the frozen land of geysers are guilty of some serious grooving that if they hailed from America then perhaps the name might be more recognisable, but.. baby steps, one thing at a time. Although the album is mainly about partying, it’s surprisingly non-dumb and juvenile. The lyrics might be saying ‘let’s get fucked up’, but the playing is anything but.

On ‘Just The Tip’,  vocalist and guitarist Bjarni Olafsson sings:

Watch out we’ll be coming around,We’re going to destroy your fucking town…We’re Churchhouse and we’ll destroy your fucking town…

Party time indeed, but whilst he’s shouting out the lyrics, Olafsson is laying down some sweet scuzzy fuzz, as the rhythm section of Dagur Atlason and Sigurgeir Luoviksson (on drums and bass respectively) lock in to a monstrous groove. Churchhouse Creepers throw the rule book out by changing style and tempo so often… during the same song… purists will be pulling their hair out and shaking their fists in an angry manner.’What Mamma Don’t Know’ and ‘Drunk Something’ are just two examples of ‘fuck the traditionalists, we’ll do it our way!”.

‘Satan Waits’ is an incredible walk down memory lane to very early Black Sabbath, with some delicious Geezer Butler inspired bass, and ‘Lizard Boy’ carries on the beefy grooving, complete with a glass-shattering scream from Olafsson.

One quick search on the old interweb and it turns out that a church house creeper is a “type of wet, hot, and steamy fart” as inspired by Johnny Knoxville in Bad Grandpa! So there you go, you are now reliably informed. The band Churchhouse Creepers are anything but a wet, hot, and steamy fart. They offer up some high tempo grooves with juicy guitar licks that get the head nodding.

From Party To Apocalypse is out now and deserves your attention. For details on how to purchase the album check the band out on www.facebook.com/churchhousecreepers
