Review: Alter Bridge – ‘The Last Hero’

show me a leader that knows what is right”, I think it’s safe to say he won’t be voting Trump. ‘The Writing On The Wall’ pokes the finger at climate change deniers, as Myles fires off his lyrics with venom, over the kind of groove we know and love from Alter Bridge. It wouldn’t be an Alter Bridge album without at least one epic ballad, and here we have ‘To Be Remembered’, a nod to people who have fallen in service, whether it be in the armed forces, the fire department, or police force. This song also has one of the best solos on the record. ‘The Last Hero’ really feels like a continuation of ‘Fortress’, both stylistically and tonally, and this album couldn’t have come quick enough. It has been a three year gap, and whilst we’ve been treated to solo albums from Mark, and collaborations with Slash from Myles, this album is a welcome return to their day jobs. I honestly don’t think Alter Bridge have it in them to make a bad album. There’s a real heroic sound to this, as with the previous albums, and always a glimmer of hope, even in their darkest lyrics. Having not one, but two, incredible guitarists in the band is a blessing. Tremonti is even humble enough to say that he believes Kennedy to be the best player in the band, despite sprinkling the record with some absolutely breath-taking solos. Kennedy’s singing is of its usual stratospheric high standard, and I think he could be one of this generations greatest rock singers. The albums ender is the title track, and probably sums up the whole album. At 6:42 in length, they throw in all the elements that make them great. This album should be called ‘The Last Heroes’, because Alter Bridge are saving Rock from mediocrity.   Review: Colin Plumb
