Introducing: Slomo Casino

Manchester-based Indie/Pop Soul-duo Slomo Casino are set to release their debut EP ‘Marshmallow’ on November 12th, and we caught up with Johnny and Jack to get the lowdown on what to expect from Slomo Casino.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Jonny: We’ve both been good friends for a long time and were housemates during our university days at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. But it wasn’t until last year’s lockdown and a load of remote drunken writing sessions that we realised we had something going and worked really well together. (This is excluding the Christmas songwriting hand in Jack did at college that I helped him finish and eventually hand in 6 months late of the deadline).

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

Jonny – A bit of a blur, but incredibly exciting. It was actually a battle of the bands at about 14 years old in a band I was in called ‘The Mighty Gigolos’. 14-year-olds make for an enthusiastic crowd, so our 30 or so friends made us feel like rockstars…and we won!

Jack – Can’t remember, it was over a decade ago, probably thought I was the dog’s bollocks with a load of sweaty adolescents cheering me on.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

People can expect dreamy, indie pop with a soulful edge.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Don’t just copy what other people do. Try to make content that you would find interesting/funny to yourself!

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Our first single ‘Marshmallow ’came out in September [new single ‘Stuck In The Middle’ came out in October, check it out here]

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

(Jonny) I think that Blossoms for us would be a dream gig to play on. A fellow band from Stockport, and I’ve actually recorded a lot in the past with their producer Rich Turvey, who was a big influence on me with my own production.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Slomo Casino?! Bet you get that answer a lot…

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

(Jonny) My family are all classical musicians so I was around it a lot, but I think it was going to punk gigs as a young teenager with bands my stepbrother Loz played in that really drew me to guitar and noise! Looked like fun

(Jack) I think going to gigs as a teen played a big part in it for me but also listening to music and feeling the irresistible urge to air drum the parts, this paired with Guitar Hero World Tour brought the drummer out in me.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Jonny – After MANY-a-cancelled show, it’s hard to recall, but I have tickets for Black Puma’s upcoming Manchester show which I am very much buzzing for.

Jack – Mine was BANKS at the Birmingham 02 academy, one of my top 10 gigs of all time for sure, if you don’t know who she is you should!

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Jonny – ‘Ta Da’, Scissor Sisters (maybe not that surprising I don’t know..)

Jack – Nickelback – ‘All The Right Reasons’…for all the wrong reasons.

What new albums have you been enjoying this year?

(Jonny) So far in 2k21, I’ve been loving ‘Private Space ’by Durand Jones & The Indications. Funky stuff, and with stuff picking up in 2k21, everything’s coming up Milhouse.

(Jack) I haven’t listened to half as much new music as I’d like this year due to developing a bit of an obsession with jazz, however, some notable records are “The Off-Season” by J.Cole and “Chemtrails Over The Country Club” by Lana Del Ray

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We are as ACTIVE as you can possibly imagine… And in fact, as a brand new band, our socials were only born a month or two ago. So jump on! You will not find another Slomo Casino.
