Introducing: A Permanent Shadow

Barcelona-based electronic rock act A Permanent Shadow consists of musician CP Fletcher, for the recording of debut album “Songs of Loss”, CP surrounded himself with a rotating cast of musicians and producers. Here’s everything that you need to know about A Permanent Shadow from CP himself…

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Well, in the case of A Permanent Shadow we are not really a band. It’s myself plus two producers, Albert and Valentí. I’ve known Valentí for almost 20 years sharing stages and rehearsal spaces. Albert used to be my girlfriend’s piano teacher before he got into composing and arranging full time. I started working on the project probably in late 2016 with a different collaborator, but that turned out to be a dead end. With Albert we started tweaking my songs in 2017, that’s when A Permanent Shadow really came into existence.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

The first gig with A Permanent Shadow was the album presentation for our debut record. It was great fun, though I look back with mixed feelings as a week later we went into lockdown and all future commitments got cancelled.

What should people expect when they check A Permanent Shadow out? How would you describe yourself?

You could call our music Melancholic Electronic Rock. I grew up in the Eighties, and they sure had a big influence on my musical taste. I’d like to think that A Permanent Shadow makes hooky music with a twist.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

The quality of the music is vital, though I don’t believe in the myth that a good song will always find its audience. In order to stand out, you need to become visible, and that means lots of promotion. Without promotion, you are pretty dead in the ground.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Our new Single “Shining Star” came out in September. For more information on our first album “Songs of Loss,” you should best visit www.apermanentshadow.com. We’ll release a new record in early 2022.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

John Grant maybe, who I am a huge fan of. It would be a pleasure and an honour to share a stage with him.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

I honestly have no idea. There are some artists though that have been around for a while and who I think deserve to be more successful. People like Frazey Ford, The Anchoress, or Paul Draper come to mind.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

“Let’s Dance” by David Bowie. My sister bought the album and even though I was only a little child, when I first heard it I knew that I wanted to be involved in music in some way. To this day I have a soft spot for the record, though it’s probably not one of Bowie’s best.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

New Model Army in 2020. I’ve been a fan for ages, and I was lucky because unlike on previous tours, they opted to play a greatest hits set instead of mainly new stuff. I like their new songs as well, but you can’t beat “Vagabonds” or “Stupid Questions” live.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Labour of Love Volume One. I love UB40. The Ali Campbell version, that is. It’s a bit sad what happened to them, what with the rift between the brothers, but I have to admit I never tire of their most emblematic songs.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We are mainly on Facebook and Instagram. You can find us under @apermanentshadow on both. Now that the single release is fast approaching, we have some video stuff in store that we can’t wait to share on our Youtube channel!
