With “The Revenge of…”, The Nearly Deads have unleashed an EP that grabs you by the throat, shakes you about, and gives you a squeeze before letting you go. There is an essence of Lzzy Hale, with a pinch of Blondie and Pat Benatar thrown in for good measure. For me, it is all about the blend of vocals over the hard rock sound that really works. I love this EP so much that I have bought a physical copy to replace the review copy! ‘Diamond In The Rough’ is the first track, and it is a stonker. The guitars get your head nodding and toes tapping from the very start, the bass is dark and fuzzy, and the vocals have depth. Channelling a more punk vibe, ‘My Evil Ways’ has more grit, emphasised by the dark bass and boxy, snarly guitars. The rich, complex riffs pull you further into this track. The vocals are bang up to date, determined and sticking two fingers up to the world. This track moves along at pace, but the vocals are really clear. I would love to hear this one live. I can already imagine the crowd bouncing up and down and singing along. “Not Listening” reminds me of Those Damn Crows. There are so many textures here, starting with clashes from the drums. The vocals are stripped back, allowing your head to catch up with what is going on. The song has an emotional intensity which ramps up, with surly guitars, fierce and direct. With a powerful message about standing up and taking control, ‘Revenge’ starts with muscular guitars that fade away to leave the vocals and drums, packing a commanding punch, with the guitars returning for the chorus. Again, this would sound amazing live, I’m sure. It is vibrant, expressive and an utter delight. ‘Frequencies’ has a slightly softer, haunting quality, however, it still features strident guitars and fuzzy bass, and has enough going on to keep you interested. The darkness of the instrumentation provides an interesting juxtaposition to the purity and lightness of the vocals. The final offering, ‘As Good As It Gets’ is one of those tracks that makes the hairs stand up on your neck, and you know that you are listening to something really special. I absolutely cannot praise this EP highly enough. The Nearly Deads are not afraid of space in a track, or mixing things up to keep you off balance.
