Review: Lane Change – 'Rise' EP

The male/female dynamics in the same band are nothing new, but having two vocalists of opposite sexes sharing the vocal duties is quite rare these days. That’s what gives unsigned Phoenix quartet Lane Change a head start in standing out from the crowd. Having both Myles Vann and Lizzie Shafer to call on to deliver some smooth, soulful vocals is a major plus point. Take the track ‘Club 27’ for instance, which begins like an outtake from a recent Vintage Trouble session. Vann takes the song to the middle before handing over to Shafer. Two different vocal styles, two different tones, but both having the same effect… getting the feet tapping, the hands clapping, and the ass shaking. Gotta love a song with some vigorous tambourine shaking going on! Drummer, Cameron Holladay has an old school feel about his drumming, never flash or overplaying, just keeping it simple, which is refreshing. ‘Floodwater’ is all about the guitar of Jake Galambos, a very British blues rock sound in its execution. Inspired by greats like Mick Ralphs, Peter Green and Paul Kossoff, it’s a fantastic combo of meaty riffs mixed with cool chords. The dual vocals again work very well, especially during the ascending harmonies mid song. A cool song with a nice little groove to it. ‘The Rich Get Richer’ is another moment with a sweet groove. Vann handles most of the lead vocals early on, until Shafer takes over as the song reaches its climax. The riffs are chunky, and the groove reminds me of the quiet, understated work that Brad Whitford does in Aerosmith. One of the most underrated guitarists… ever! ‘We Won’t Back Down’ closes the EP out with a fat bass sound from Shafer that rattles around in the head for some time after. The song changes style and tempo in numerous places, showing that Lane Change have many facets to their sound. Although sometimes EP’s are difficult to get a feel of a band, on this occasion Lane Change do more than enough to warrant further investigation. ‘Rise’ is available now.
