Review: Kissin’ Dynamite – 'Ecstasy'

Kissin’ Dynamite vocalist Hannes Braun best sums up the band himself by saying, “Catchy good-time hooks and enjoyable tunes full of passion – that’s our thing and the reason for the foundation of the group” Or how about this from drummer Andreas Schnitzer, “You need neither reinvent the wheel nor convey multiple messages with your songs.” Precise and to the point. Kissin’ Dynamite offer up timeless, undiluted rock ‘n’ roll. Not so much “don’t bore us, get to the chorus”, but the hooks are instant.  Simple, really. It’s stadium rock, but just not in actual stadiums at the minute. ‘Ecstasy’ is the latest album from the German five piece. More authentic and more feel-good than any similar bands coming out of LA, Kissin’ Dynamite might look like they belong on Sunset Strip, but they ooze the grit that a lot of American bands lack these days. ‘Breaking The Silence’, for instance, is more of a traditional hard rock sound that most American counterparts shun. Braun has an impressive set of pipes on him; clean, but with an added rasp, and instantly makes the listener sit up and pay attention. From the first few bars of opening track ‘I’ve Got The Fire’, it’s almost like all the dragons on Dragons Den are saying “I’m in!” in unison. It’s instant, easy to sing along to, and hard to get out of your head. Catchy, good-time hooks indeed. Same with ‘You’re Not Alone’. A huge chorus with hooks big enough to land Moby Dick’s big brother. A chorus that needs to be heard ringing around a stadium. While some bands, (take Bon Jovi as an example) sound dated, others, like Kissin’ Dynamite and H.E.A.T, sound fresh. ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ has a swagger that Bon Jovi have been missing for some time now, but then again, Bon Jovi wouldn’t produce something that fizzes like the title track does here. Vocals to strip paint from the wall at one hundred paces, the yin to the yang of the track that follows. ‘Still Around’ is an unashamed power ballad. Complete with heartfelt lyrics, searing guitar solos and the all important acoustic guitar fills. It’s impossible not to like a track that name checks Journey. The guitars are not put out to pasture during the quest for melodic hooks and catchy choruses. The aforementioned ‘Breaking The Silence’ is a sizzling, fist-in-the-air moment with beefy riffs (and impressive isolated vocals). Guitarists Ande Braun and Jim Muller certainly make their presence felt, especially on ‘Waging War’ and the Lizzy-esque ‘One More Time’. The album finishes like it started, with a feel-good, catchy-as-hell moment. ‘No Time To Wonder’ is massive, simply made to get a crowd bouncing. As Emil from Robocop would say, “I like it!“. ‘Ecstasy’ is available now through Metal Blade Records. Kissin’ Dynamite are out on tour with Powerwolf throughout Europe during October and November, all tour dates here. Review: Dave  ]]>
