Review: Elles Bailey – ‘Road I Call Home’

“I can write a book from the scars on my skin” you believe her. A slow burning way to kick off album number two, featuring a gorgeous slide guitar tone throughout. With acclaimed Memphis session musician Bobby Wood championing her cause, Bailey was introduced to The Black Keys mainman Dan Auerbach. The end result being the collaborative, cool summer breeze of ‘Little Piece Of Heaven’, upon which Wood lays down an effortlessly cool keyboard sound. The vivid imagery continues on ‘Wild Wild West’, and perhaps Elles is making an observation about the music industry when she talks about “don’t you know you’re all cutthroats, cheaters, gunslingers, deceivers…”. ‘Deeper’ sees the album turning down a Beth Hart influenced route, and it’s easy to see why Elles is playing the same day as Hart at Ramblin’ Man Fair. Featuring a fantastic, laid back groove (complete with horn section), it is a towering few minutes. As are the sultry ‘What’s The Matter With You’ and the pulsating title track, ‘Miss Me When I’m Gone’ could be Billie Jo Spears classic ’Blanket On The Ground’ for a new generation. The same “live life to the fullest” mantra, but with a copious amount of bodacious slide guitar. ‘Light In The Distance’ ends the album on a beautiful, stripped back note. Just Elles and an accompanying piano, it’s ends the album on a hopeful note. Bailey finally getting to go home after countless miles. Simply staggering. ‘Road I Call Home’ is available now through Outlaw Music.
