Review: Crimson Star – The Olde Dawg (EP)

Crimson Star‘The Olde Dawg’ is the third and latest release from Birmingham based trio Crimson Star, and continues the high quality featured on 2018’s ‘Bay View’ EP. Like its predecessor, ‘The Olde Dawg’ again features the considerable talents of the in-demand Romesh Dodangoda behind the production console, and like ‘Bay View’, it’s rather tasty indeed.

For your hard earned £5 (or £15 if you opt for the rather sexy merchandise bundle) you get three slabs of well written and well played Rock music, delivered to you by the “Federal Bureau of Driven Rock Tunage”. Beginning with a harder-edged Kasabian-meets-Nirvana vibe on ‘Living a Lie’, ‘The Olde Dawg’ offers up quite an instant shot of adrenaline. The guitar melodies are set to stun, it’s got a fantastic drum sound (courtesy of Chris Hopton) , and the vocals from Jay D Shaw are raw and power-packed. But ultimately it’s the catchy hooks that ensnares the listener and reels them in. Kasabian have written some bangers in the past, but they lacked a gritty edge, here Crimson Star right that wrong. ‘Norma’ has more of a post-grunge/alternative vibe going on, but in all honesty that’s just another round hole to try and fit a square peg into. It’s loud, brash and very fresh, with a cracking fat bass sound from Roj Ash. When the three players lock into a groove, it is indeed an almighty groove, With its rich, full sound, the title track brings the short EP to a startling conclusion. It’s edgy and commercial enough to be aired on BBC Radio 6, but at the same it still packs enough punches for a more mainstream Rock station such as Planet Rock.

‘The Olde Dawg’ is available to stream now on Spotify, but sod that, get it direct from the band themselves here.
