Introducing: The Last Element

Dutch modern rockers The Last Element are set to release their new single ‘Cut It Off’ very soon, and we spoke with band member Jasper about all things TLE-related…

DGM: What are the origins of The Last Element? How long have you been playing together?

TLE: We started a while ago. Jan and Robert already knew each other from previous musical endeavours, later on, they found Jasper and Noah and The Last Element was formed!

For each of us it fitted just like pieces of a puzzle; the sound, the style, it all just came together. We’ve been at it for about three years, but only recently has everything turned out the way we want it.

DGM: How did you feel performing your first gig, and how was it?

TLE: Excited!! Our first gig was as an opening act for Skillet; it was a sold-out show, so rad! Such a blast from the first second we walked on stage till the last – everything just felt amazing.

DGM: What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourselves?

TLE: Heavy fricking rock with a lot of heart! I think we sound like The Last Element, we really have our signature down. If you check out our Spotify and listen to a couple of sounds I’m pretty sure you will recognise us from there on out. It’s just what it is, we didn’t really think about it, but all of us have our own style and influences that just blended into what you hear now. Sure, you might recognise certain bands and styles, but all-in-all I’m sure most of you will feel like it has its own identity.

DGM: The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent. In what ways do you feel a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

TLE: Yeah, we keep losing track. I mean, so many bands with amazing sounds and so much talent. Yeah, you must find a way to stick out, but maybe sticking out is just making music that’s solid in its own way/genre? But we see a lot of different things; people try it with a story or an image or certain themes. Nowadays most things have been done, so in the end, it comes down to perseverance and hard work.

DGM: What are you working on at the moment that people can check out?

TLE: We are working hard on our newest single ‘Cut It Off’. Mixing and music are done and it’s already uploaded. We are also working on a video and new pictures to get everything in line with our story and image. But you have to wait a little while… 15 March is when it will drop! [pre-save here]

DGM: What band out there at the moment do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

TLE: That would be Bring Me The Horizon, I think that would be such an epic package! Their sound is pretty diverse, so is ours, in that way we assume it would attract a very mixed crowd, and the more the merrier!

DGM: Who do you feel will be the next band to break out?

TLE: That would be us! Haha! No really, no clue. Most of the stuff we listen to, you could say it has already broken out, right? But I feel bands like Dayseeker, Dropout Kings, or I Prevail could get bigger and bigger.

DGM: What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that!”

TLE: That would be listening to Marilyn Manson at an age of six, being like “holy ****, what is this?!” It sounded so different to all the things I used to hear; I had two sisters, they mostly played stuff like Destiny’s Child and what not. From that point on I decided I wanted to be a rockstar. No clue how to get there, I didn’t play an instrument, I wanted to play something rocky but my parents wanted me to play classical piano, yeah, it was a long road from there.

DGM: What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

TLE: Well I had tickets for I Prevail, but the show never happened! The one before that was Periphery and before that Stick To Your Guns; I wasn’t disappointed, as you might imagine!

DGM: What is the album that you have in your collection or Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

TLE: Hmm, I listen to all kinds of rock/pop/metal so nothing really strange out there. Got a lot of Queen and Michael Jackson, maybe Jamiroquai might surprise some? Or also Lady Gaga (from A Star Is Born).

DGM: Although 2020 was a year to forget, there was some great music released; what would be your album of 2020?

TLE: Yeah, so I think that hands down that would be Bring Me The Horizon ‘Post Human: Survival Horror’. It BLEW me away. Felt like some of the older stuff, more in line with ‘That’s The Spirit’.

DGM: How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

TLE: Yeah, so we could always be more active I guess haha, we’re so busy writing songs and recording that we forget to sell ourselves (and our souls to the devil) on social media. But we’ll promise to be more active.
