Introducing: He Was A God

Southern Connecticut-based He Was A God recently released their hotly anticipated debut EP, ‘The Smile & The Scar’, and drummer Chris Densky (Kriz DK) was on hand to talk us through the background of the band.  Connect with Chris, below…

What are the origins of He Was A God, how long have you been playing together?

He Was A God formed in 2019 after I had moved back to Connecticut. Tony, Dan, Ray, and I grew up together and played in a band for years so while this project is new, there’s a familiarity and comfort that came along with it as well.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band? And how was it?!

Our first show with this lineup felt great. During our downtime, due to COVID, we brought a new vocalist (Benjamin Curns) into the band and we were very eager to get on stage and show people what we had been working on. So far, so good and we have plenty of dates lined up!

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe He Was A God?

I think He Was A God offers a unique sound that not many bands have achieved before. The music is progressive yet accessible, aggressive yet hopeful, brooding and heaving with moments of calm… We want people to relate to our message and get lost in the vastness of music. Give a listen for yourself and see.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

I feel it’s very important for bands to come across as professionally as possible. You need to have the full package going for you (songwriting, production, image, stage show, marketing, etc..) to really cut through the noise of the oversaturated music industry.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

He Was A God recently released our debut EP, “The Smile & The Scar”. We’re focusing on live dates currently and will be back in the studio hopefully Summer 2022.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that He Was A God would be best suited to open for?

We would be happy playing with anyone, but I think Mastodon is a band that we all admire and would compliment our musical styling well.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

I’d like to say He Was A God! …but in all seriousness, we’re big Moon Tooth fans…and personally I’ve gotten into Unto Others recently. I see good things coming from both of those bands.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

There are so many defining musical moments but my first would have to be seeing Green Day on MTV in 1994. At such a young age, I was drawn in by the “don’t give a fuck ” attitude and that quickly opened my eyes to a whole new world. From that moment on, music was everything.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

I’m pretty sure it was Steel Panther…nothing wrong with a night of sleazy fun.

AC/DC – Brian or Bon? Or both?!

Bon all the way. Swagger and attitude that goes unmatched!

What current issue are you particularly passionate about?

Animal welfare.

There is great debate at the minute about whether or not musicians should use their platform to talk about political issues, some for and some against. Music has always been a form of protest, surely an artist has just as much right as the next person to offer an opinion? Or should they “just stick to the music”?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and thoughts. I do think that while a musician has the freedom to express their beliefs through their art, the artist does have to be considerate of how their fanbase receives and responds to those beliefs regardless if it’s in agreement with their own views. When it comes down to it, I’ve always thought of music as an escape from all the bullshit of the world and try to abide by that philosophy.

There were so many great albums released last year, what would be your favorite album of last year?

I’ve really been enjoying “Strength” by Unto Others. It’s a perfect blend of goth-injected metal.
