Introducing: Delilah Daybreaks

Delilah Daybreaks are a punk rock trio out of Minneapolis, guitarist/vocalist Doyle Alexander talks us through the background of the band, as well as offering up his own musical memories. Connect with Doyle and Delilah Daybreaks below…

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

We started about five years ago… Mycah [Mycah Rapoport, bass] and I lived in the same apartment building and were hanging out all the time and I was playing guitar and wanted to start another band after my last one fizzled out. So we started Delilah Daybreaks and then Owen [Owen Hiber, drums] joined a few months after we started and then we played our first show later that year. Made our first EP after that, and then from there, we started trying to find our sound and didn’t really get it for a few years after our
first EP.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Delilah Daybreaks?

I think people should just go in and expect to hear music with passion and meaning behind it with a pop-punk vibe. I would describe our sound as somewhere between Jawbreaker and Weezer. If you know those two bands, you’ll kinda know what we sound like.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

I wasn’t too nervous to play but I was nervous to be playing original songs. At our first show, I think we only played about three originals or so, and I was so nervous to play them. I didn’t think anything bad would happen, but I was worried people would just kinda go “you suck!” and then we would get kicked off stage.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

We’re kinda doing that older early 90s punk sound. We aren’t sounding like Neck Deep or The Story So Far, and that’s kinda what the new scene kinda sounds like. We’re much more a Blink-182 or a Sum 41 style band.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We just put out a brand new EP called [REDACTED], and we are working on a new EP right now that should come out kinda sorta not really soon. We also have a Livestream coming up in June that will have some surprises and stuff in itself.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that Delilah Daybreaks would be best suited to open for?

The Lawrence Arms, The Smoking Popes, Rules, and I don’t know if their audience would vibe with us but I would love to play with Against Me!

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

I have no idea personally, I feel like that band called Rules is really up to something kinda dope so I would love to see them blow up a bit.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

For me, that moment was the first time I heard Loco Live by the Ramones, my dad was playing it in the car when I was like five and I just remember thinking to myself “HOLY FUCKIN SHIT!” when I heard them chanting “LOBOTOMY! LOBOTOMY! LOBOTOMY!”. After that, I knew I had to learn more about punk and stuff. Then a little later I saw Green Day on Fuse playing Holiday, and then I heard about MCR, and it’s all been a bit trip from there.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The last show I went to was Descendents and it definitely did not disappoint. They blew the doors off the place, and they played for what felt like two hours. They played two different encores and it was probably one of the best shows I’ve been to.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

I don’t think [anyone] would expect me to be the guy in the band who listens to Slipknot the most out of the three of us. However, I think that answer is kinda a cop-out so I’ll say DaBaby. I listen to his newest album almost every morning and it helps me just kinda hang out and get ready for the day.

Although 2020 was a year to forget for many reasons, there was some incredible music released; what would be your album of 2020?

For me it’s between, All Distortions are Intentional by Neck Deep or Skeleton Coast by the Lawrence Arms. Both of those albums are already some of my favorites from over the last five years, they’re kickass albums, with kickass songs, and I cannot wait to hopefully see both bands live.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

Delilah Daybreaks is very active on Instagram and Tiktok, we always respond to comments, and messages, and stuff like that. We also have a Facebook and YouTube, and we are thinking of maybe getting back into the Twitter game, but we aren’t sure yet. You can find us on all of those places by just searching Delilah Daybreaks, and we are also all over streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and stuff like that.
