Live Review: Burning Rain – Bannermans, Edinburgh

“can’t you tell by my fucked up vocals?!” It’s a loose evening, there is a songbook onstage and pages are turned as the live format becomes a storytelling evening. A healthy mix of covers, Burning Rain material and choice cuts from both musicians’ illustrious pasts. As mentioned before the Whitesnake Choir is out in force, and Aldrich pays tribute before he teases them with a few bars of ‘Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City’, as well as a full lung version of ‘Crying In The Rain’. He tells a great story about how Whitesnake deepcut ‘Forevermore’ was birthed. Writing with David Coverdale, the sessions seemed to be dragging on and Coverdale was ready to give up. Aldrich said he was certain that the track was special, and pleaded with Coverdale to listen to it again in the morning with fresh ears. Hey presto, Coverdale does so and it ends up as the title track on the 2011 album. It’s not just Aldrich’s past that is re-visited. Keith St John spent some time as part of Montrose, and a magical version of ‘Rock Candy’ fills the room. One of the great unsung American rock bands, with Ronnie Montrose a much missed figure. There’s lots of chat about how St John and Aldrich met and Burning Rain was formed, before each party eventually moved on to bigger things. A lot of early Burning Rain material is dusted off, and the day-one fans are in raptures as the likes of ‘Smooth Locomotion’ and ‘Cherie Don’t Break My Heart’ are introduced. The pair seem caught out when someone shouts out for ‘Judgement Day”. “What one?” asks St John. “Your one!” responds the punter. Cue Aldrich asking St John “you remember how it goes?!”. Like I said, it was a loose, unscripted evening. There are plans for Aldrich and St John to return to Europe later this year with the full band. Current Burning Rain album ‘Face The Music’ is a fine slice of hard rock. Until they return, make do with an evening of stories and fine tunage from Doug Aldrich and Keith St John.
