Review: Taberah – HQ, Adelaide 13 Jan 2016

So whoever booked Taberah to support Nightwish at Adelaide HQ, you are clearly a gambling person, as booking a straight-up metal band as the symphonic metal act’s opener might not be the best idea. Then again, if you saw the performance from Taberah that I just witnessed then you are no gambler but knew that they would be a sure fire hit.

Putting the Tasmanian four piece on as the opening act to play traditional metal was a big ask no matter how you look at it. Hitting the stage in the all black uniform, awesome hair and power stances, the LORD-esque quartet not only managed to energise the crowd, they pumped them up and won them over. While I was down the front before the gig I got the feeling that the crowd was just going to humour the support such was their Nightwish devotion but the way that that Taberah hit the stage and just pummelled their way through the set was blinding. The crowd didn’t stand a chance. Now I said LORD-esque, so in the style of Lord Tim led Australian powerhouse that sprang from the demise of Dungeon. Taberah have the same band setup and tone as Lord as well as the same easy going but hard rocking feel about them. Let me just give you an idea of the songs that Taberah played from their albums ‘Necromancer’ (2013) and the ‘Light Of Which I Dream’ (2015);

Necromancer

Burning In The Moonlight

Final March Of Man

Crypt

Requiem Of The Damned

Are those song titles metal or what? Infact ‘Requiem Of The Damned’ included a reprise of Sabbath’s ‘Warpigs’, a song with lyrics as poignant and relevant as the day it was written. Not content with taking the symphonic metal crowd on a journey into the depths of traditional metal there was a requirement that they joined in… and they did. Getting this crowd to do Warpigs was a highlight for me and clearly gave Taberah a lot of enjoyment as they lifted again. At the end of the set there was some reluctance to let the band leave the stage such was their performance.

With drums, bass and swapping guitar leads I was delighted to discover these guys and will be diving into their catalogue to hear more. Active since 2005 they clearly love what they do and that enthusiasm and solid setlist is what won the crowd over. Their style is not just LORD but there is a touch of early Maiden and a little bit of MSG. Infact it was the Michael Schenker feel that drew me in as I thought that I was listening to ‘Assault Attack’ in particular the classics ‘Ulcer’ and ‘Samurai’. Dual, duelling guitars and grinding grooves are always welcome. They put on a great show and set the scene for the night to come. Catching up with them after their set I was delighted to hear that the Dungeon\LORD reference was a huge compliment and that the guys will be recording a new album with Lord Tim as producer. I for one will be looking forward to that. So if you like your metal traditional, with smart song writing and great riffs then I strongly suggest that you check them out. For those of you far away from Australia and unable to see these guys live I would encourage you to check out their video for, ‘Burning in the Moonlight’.

Great band, awesome performance and solid sound. If you can win over a Nightwish crowd playing solid metal then you must be doing something right. If you like your metal the way it should be then check Taberah out!
