Review: Radio Haze – ‘Mountains’

this could be what Arctic Monkeys would sound like if they were any good” crept into my psyche. As much as I think that the Sheffield upstarts are the most over-hyped band of the last few decades, Radio Haze vocalist/guitarist Phil Janoske does sometimes remind me of head Monkey, Alex Turner. ‘Silhouette’ is exhibit A, ‘From Birth To Cemetery’ exhibit B. The latter also features another incredible jam towards the end as well. Maybe it’s the fact that Janoske isn’t attempting to sound like Robert Plant that gives the band a modern edge, but a song like ‘The Weight Of Love’ could easily slot into the Radio One playlist, as well as not sounding out of place on Later With Jools. I mean, have you actually heard The Blossoms? It escapes me how mainstream radio can push something that bland, yet wouldn’t give a track like ‘Consumed By The Fire’ the time of day. Radio Haze constantly mix it up, and just as you think that you have their gist, they go off in the other direction, and pull a track out like ‘Lay My Hopes Across The Sea’. The gentle intro leads into an easy-going ramble that works on so many fronts. It’s as close as Radio Haze get to what might be described as ‘classic’ rock. The title track is another highlight; the cool breeze guitar work from Janoske early on is effortless in setting the scene, but when he lets fly towards the end, it is truly magical. ‘Mountains’ is a fantastic break from the norm; bold and imaginative with fantastic playing. I would expect these songs to stretch out in a live setting, and for Radio Haze to flex their muscles. I can’t imagine many performances sounding the same as the previous one.
