Introducing: Void Collapse

Hailing from Texas and Michigan, Void Collapse is comprised of Shane Elwell (Flesh Consumed, Excantation, Urosepsis, and many more) on drums, and Terry Oberson on guitars, and vocals. Both love death metal, and all forms of extreme music. Here’s an introduction to Void Collapse from Terry himself…

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

I’m going to say 5 years maybe. I’m really bad with this stuff. I found Shane on a message board and hired him as a session drummer. I needed some real death metal drums, and he’s really good at making those.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

We don’t play out. We’re basically a project band only. Shane lives in Texas, and I live in Michigan. We both have jobs we can’t get away from. I’m old with a family, lol. I doubt we ever will be a live band.

What should people expect when they check Void Collapse out? How would you describe yourself?

Early 2000’s death metal mixed with concept, narration, new wave, classical music. The whole bag basically. Sort of like what Cradle of Filth does, but death metal as a base instead of black.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Oh wow, that’s a good question. If I knew it would be a lot easier. Lol, I don’t know promoting VC is the hardest part of doing it. Honestly, it’s hard to even buy promotion, because it’s such a niche genre. Maybe, just be a whole package, be good, be consistent, and keep going. Just do your thing, and always try to learn.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We just released our sophomore album ‘Gwenda’ a few months ago. It’s the first in a four-album concept about the Queens of the tarot. We also have a split single coming up this month with Before the Storm We Flourished called ‘Utter Contempt’, so look out for that.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Purulence

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Purulence is my favorite band right now. Infinite Hex is super rad too. Hopefully, both blow up.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I can’t really remember, probably the radio or The Beatles. Morbid Angel is the first death metal band I was into at 12 years old. I got into Relapse bands around 20 or so, like Brutal Truth, and Nile. That’s when I started wanting to make it, but it was a long road learning to record, and play I’m 42 now. I’ve always just wanted to be a part of death metal in some form.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Zao a few months before the pandemic. It was pretty awesome. I haven’t been to a show yet, I’ve been looking, but haven’t seen anything I can go to yet.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Mariah Carey’s Caution, lol

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

I’m on Instagram most of the time. That’s our base pretty much. Come say hi😊
