Introducing: Sorrow Enthroned

Sorrow Enthroned is a one-man extreme metal act birthed from the woods of New England.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Sorrow Enthroned is a one-man band, I have been playing guitar since I was somewhere between 13-15 years old I can’t remember. For the first album I picked up a little bit of drums and bass just for recording purposes as well as learning vocals, so vocals are new for me. I started programming drums for the sake of convenience.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Sorrow Enthroned?

This is an extreme metal band, each album has bits of black and death metal. It has a raw sound and the lyrical themes range from occultism to depression to violence and things like that. I take inspiration from Morbid Angel, Dark Funeral, and some slam and deathcore bands.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a name for themselves?

It’s a lot of networking and promoting, but the main thing is having memorable music that people will enjoy. Songs that have super epic moments like a big breakdown, crazy guitar solo, fast blast beat section, or whatever sticks with people.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

I just released a single about a month ago called ‘Constricted Upon the Throat of the Lamb’. It is a taste of what the new music is like, although it is more technical than the rest of the new songs I have written. Over the past year or so I have been reconstructing the sound to a more strictly death metal feel.

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

Vomit Forth is a band from my area I enjoy.

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

I discovered Carnal Desecration not too long ago, and before I did any research on them I assumed by their music they’d been around for a long time, but they apparently just formed recently. I absolutely love their music, it is super sinister death metal with slight tinges of black metal and I don’t know why I don’t hear more about them.

What are your own first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I think it was more of a gradual transition, I always loved metal and associated myself with the music by learning riffs, going to shows, and listening to new bands over the years. It has always been something I did for the enjoyment and release of it. Making music became more natural and less awkward the more I did it, and I think it’s something you continually learn and evolve from.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

My life has been hectic, I haven’t been able to attend shows since the summer of 2022 but it was a deathcore show at the Webster in Hartford. It was Spite and I can’t remember the other bands, I very strongly feel like Boundaries played as well, they are another band local to me in Connecticut. That venue is tiny and deathcore and hardcore shows get pretty violent most of the time. Probably the only good thing about Connecticut.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

I’m passionate about assisting in plunging Earth into a parallel universe where there’s a multidimensional lake of fire so every soul can be burned alive by hellfire in order to ascend into a higher enlightened form of humanity.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

I know most other metal heads have other music they listen to, but I must be a freak I really dislike anything that isn’t some form of metal or extreme metal. It’s very rare but sometimes ill listen to a song or two by Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, or The Beatles but then it’s back to music about sawing people’s heads off I’m still not sick of it.

What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

Sanguisugabogg are gods, most people already know their music by now also 7 Doors released an album called ‘Feast of the Repulsive Dead’. It’s super good and he’s another one-man band. It sounds like a combination of all the great things about death metal from 1990 until now. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the new To the Grave but I’m very excited to and I think I will tonight.

What does 2023 hold for you?

I am balls deep into writing the 3rd album, it will pretty much be a straightforward death metal album with only small pieces of black metal in parts. I have always enjoyed heavier death metal/deathcore/slam-type bands and it feels much more natural for me to write in that style. Im excited to release the album this year to show the progression of the band in the 3-year gap between albums.
