Introducing: Inherently Lost

Here’s everything that you need to know about Youngstown, Ohio-based metallers Inherently Lost, courtesy of vocalist Mark Moats.

What are the origins of the band, and how long have Inherently Lost been playing together?

After playing in several “scene” type bands over the years I felt the need to be more creative in the writing and overall sound. IL started off as a side project while I was playing bass for Orwellian and vocals for Torso Murder around 2017-2018.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Inherently Lost?

Heavy male vocals, female clean vocals keyboard/synth/samples. A mixture of symphonic metal, industrial, melodic death metal, black metal, doom, nu-metal, alternative, rock, hardcore, progressive metal, and everything in between.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

With the new line up we had our first show this past December. Other than some technical difficulties with the sound stage it felt pretty good to be up there jamming.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a name for themselves?

Less following “scenes” and more pushing boundaries and mixing genres. Most musicians do listen to several different genres, and even subgenres let’s just say under the metal umbrella for example, but for some reason, the majority of bands decide to be cookie-cutter type bands.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We just released our new single Unraveling Sanity streaming on all sites now and are finishing up writing and recording the new album Art of Corruption.

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel Inherently Lost would be best suited to open for?

Lacuna Coil, Static-x, Fear Factory, Spiritbox

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

I would say Trephine. Both guitarists Seth and Ricky were in Orwellian with me, and the bass player Justin was the guitarist in Torso Murder.

What are your own first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

Probably messing with and breaking strings on an uncle’s guitar. I was a teenager when I felt the inspiration to play. I always wrote poetry and grew up singing along to all kinds of music. My grandmother gave me this little karaoke machine with a built-in cd player. I sang along with that covering all kinds of metal and rock, then it just snowballed from there.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Finally got to see Weird Al Yankovic, he actually played mostly originals on this tour.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

There was a train derailment near my hometown that spilled toxic chemicals into the groundwater and instead of cleaning it up properly, they decided to burn it. They pretty much nuked a small town with chemicals. Countless family and friends still live nearby and the long-term effects are going to be bad. All in the name of the mighty dollar. You probably heard about it, it is still national news.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Meg Myers Take Me to the Disco. Great album kinda has a late 90’s vibe. There’s just something about her vibrato that tickles my fancy.

What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

Right now I would say Septic Flesh Modern Primitive. I’ve been jamming out to Tallah, Epica, Infected Rain, Make Them Suffer, Tetrarch, and Cradle of Filth.

What does 2023 hold for Inherently Lost?

Playing more shows and releasing our Art of Corruption album this fall.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

I am pretty active on FB, IG, and Twitter. You can find all social media and Inherently Lost streaming in the link below.
