Introducing: Søndag

Søndag are a low-tuned rock band out of Piacenza, Italy. Guitarist Marcello Lega talks us through the formation of the band, as well as his own personal musical influences, don’t forget to check out new single ‘Titans’ and give the band a follow on their socials.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Hello guys, Marcello from Søndag here, nice to meet you! We started Søndag back in 2014, after breaking up our previous band “Edema”. Edema was an extreme metal band formed by ¾ of the current Søndag line up, after many years of activity we decided to close the project and open the Søndag chapter.

With Søndag we wanted to create a unique sound lead by a “low-tuned” string section (8 strings, bass VI guitars), shifting the extreme metal sound to a more rock one compared to Edema.

With almost 6 years of activity now, we released 2 full-lengths, 1 Ep, and 3 singles, promoting them with many European tours.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

It was one of the coolest things I made in a lifetime. It was totally mind-blowing for me to perform in front of an actual audience, doing something that I felt entirely mine in terms of creativity. Obviously, I remember I also felt very upset before the show, but then… suddenly after I picked up the instrument it turned out to be a game-changer for me!

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

We’d like to think that Søndag is a project which could be interesting to the ones who are looking for something different. Søndag’s sound can be described as groovy and heavy: ”low-tuned rock”.

The most curious thing about our songs is that we use quite heavy tunings, in some riffs the guitars play the same octave as the bass.

Above all, we always try to keep up the groovy riffs along with trippy atmospheres and catchy refrains!

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Honestly, I’ve got no magic formula for that I’m afraid, but one thing I know for sure: one doesn’t need to force himself doing something excessively weird or extreme to stand out from the others. Or either to copy the successful ones.

I know it sounds obvious but I would go with a classic: “write what you feel to and act as natural as it comes”.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We are currently promoting our last single “Titans”. This song came up in a very tense moment for us.

In these hard times, we’ve seen that social media became (once again) a place where everyone poured out his fears and anger lead by a huge wave of misinformation.

The concept behind our last single lies upon these very moments in time, and when we say ”we are the titans of nothin”, we really mean that everyone seems to have the truth in their pockets, but the reality is another thing.

You can check it out here

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

We’d love to open a Bring Me The Horizon show…what is that they say? “Never stop dreaming”?

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

That’s really hard to say, BMTH are one of the most popular rock acts at the moment. Also, bands like Fever333 and Code Orange are doing pretty well at the moment… I guess we’ll see!

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

My older brother introduced me to (rock and metal) music when I was 11 or 12 years old I think. He was also playing drums, this triggered my curiosity.. so I started playing guitar, and I definitely fell in love with that!

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Cult of Luna. Their last tour promoting “A Dawn To Fear” in Milan on October 2019 I think.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Basically all the discography of Deadmau5!

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

Arriving at the end of this shitty year!

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We try to do our best to be active on most of the main social media channels. I’ll leave you some links to connect with us:

Thanks again guys!

Take care,

Marcello
