Founded in 2017 by guitarist Jason Clark and vocalist Lacey Crowe, Bourbon House is a US-based blues-rock band that is beginning to gather up a head of steam thanks to Classic Rock Rock Magazine being onboard, and word-of-mouth from those lucky enough to have caught them live. Lacey fills in the blanks on our introduction to Bourbon House…
What are the origins of the band, how long have Bourbon House been playing together?
Lacey: Jason and I started the band in 2017 when we recorded our first EP, so the two of us have been playing together in this band since then and had been an acoustic cover duo prior. We met our drummer, Ryan, in 2019 and our various bassists have all been friends of ours.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Bourbon House?
Lacey: Female-fronted rock and roll with a hard 70’s style blues-rock edge.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
Lacey: We went straight to performing as an original band, though we did throw in some covers to fill time, and our first gig was New Year’s Eve. Witnessing people rocking out to music we wrote for the first time was unlike any performance experience I’d ever had and it was honestly a little dream-like. It still gets me.
The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a name for themselves?
Lacey: Just be true to yourself and what inspires you. Don’t create something for the sake of selling it but also don’t forget to sell yourself. Social media is important, advertising is important, and understanding your story and audience is important.
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
Lacey: So many things! Right now, we’re prepping for a small club headling tour that starts in two weeks so please check out those dates on any of our social sites and/or Bandsintown. We will be hitting OK, LA, TX, MS, KS, AL, GA, SC, TN, IA. We will also have new music and videos coming in the next couple of months. Also, come see us on the Who’s on Top stage on Friday, July 15 in Cadott, WI at Rockfest!
In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?
Lacey: We have a sound that is a lot closer to classic than it is to modern, so bands that are still touring from that era like Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, Slash, and then newer bands like Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey, Rival Sons.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
Lacey: I actually just heard a band that was recommended to me by a mutual connection that has a good Jimi Hendrix kind of vibe to them and I’d like to see them continue on and get some love. They’re called Fortune Child.
What are your own first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?
Lacey: I never wanted to do it until I met Jason, who always has and will have a much different story. Confidence doesn’t come naturally to me so I had to really build it and work at it. Even performing live and writing our own songs back in 2017 was a little uncomfortable for me. But I think the moment you’re talking about came when I first heard the recordings we’d done on our EP.
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
Lacey: The Black Crowes with openers Dirty Honey and before that was The Raconteurs.
What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?
Lacey: We’re here for the music and the animals.
The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
Lacey: I don’t know if anyone would be surprised, I really listen to almost everything. Shania Twain? Specifically, the “Woman in Me” album is exceptional and I can remember it playing in our household a lot when I was a kid so it’s nostalgic.
Although 2021 was another year to forget, there were some amazing new albums released, what would be your album of last year?
Lacey: The Pretty Reckless – Death by Rock and Roll is a great new album.
What does 2022 hold for you?
Lacey: Lots of new music, videos, and touring. So far, it’s looking like our busiest year yet.
