Review: Monster Truck – SWG3, Glasgow

“Ain’t nobody gonna tell me how to live” line, along with the chorus “Oh, I’m gonna soar like an eagle, my wings will carry me away” seem to particularly strike a chord, judging by the audience response. Same with the ode to 1985, ‘Thundertruck’: “All we need is a real metal ripper, all we want is to thrash our faces off like 1985!”. Christ, the place was jumping when this was aired, especially when the “1985 like 1985” refrain is repeated over and over. From the current album ‘True Rockers’, ‘Thundertruck’ and ‘Evolution’ form a formidable pairing in a live setting where they are performed back-to-back. It’s one feel-good anthem after another. Music at its simplest, nothing fancy, just memorable music played very, very well. ‘True Rockers’, the album, has some total bangers on it, none more so than the head-banging fist-raising title track. Who cannot identify with the lyrics: “I’m not an artist or a poet or a saint, I never claimed to be much of anything, I turn everything up until it breaks, I know who I am”. When the words “I am a true rocker” are repeated over and over, it’s hard not to get swept away in the enthusiasm. Same with the encore ‘Why are you not rocking?’; one of those impossible to resist moments. After opening slots on some pretty sweet arena tours, Monster Truck are out there on their own and doing just fine thank you. This tour is only just getting started; catch them throughout Europe, finishing in Sweden on May 23rd. All tour dates here.
