“How do we market this?”. ‘Paths’ is not an album to compartmentalise. Sure, the bottleneck intro on opening track ‘One Way’ would have blues enthusiasts drooling, but the blues vibe and feel doesn’t hang around for long. By the time the album fades out with the lush tones of ‘Retribution’, you will have tied yourself in knots trying to pigeonhole the band. Even though the name of the band hints at a performer and his sidekicks, this is a band in every sense of the word. Wille Edwards on vocals and numerous guitars (including some stunning lap steel work), Matt Brooks on bass and cello, and drummer and percussionist extraordinaire Andrew Naumann. Blended together, they make this gorgeous, organic blend of music that is a breath of fresh air. ‘Paths’ is, unusual, thought-provoking, and wildly eclectic. The aforementioned ‘One Way’ is an infectious, foot-tapping, rollicking opener that deals with the foreign policies of numerous western governments. Coupled with an uplifting chorus that offers a peaceful solution, name-checking Mandela, Gandhi and Tutu. It’s an incredible few minutes. Keeping it topical, ‘Chakra’ deals with environmental issues, and a world music vibe seeps in, thanks mainly to the stellar percussive work from Naumann. If you have ever caught Willie & The Bandits live, then you will have no doubt come away waxing lyrically about the groovy cat behind the kit. Here, with more instruments at his disposal, Naumann will transport you to another plane. The environmental theme continues on closing track ‘Retribution’, which has so many facets to admire: the lap steel sound, the solid rhythms from Brooks and Naumann, and then one almighty wailing jam to bring the track on home. With so much on ‘Paths’ to admire, it’s an album of many ingredients, and with ‘How Long’, Wille Edwards has paid one of the most heartfelt tributes to Chris Cornell ever. Available now on Fat Toad Records, Wille & The Bandits are out on the road until March 30th, all tour dates can be found here. Review: Dave]]>
