Review: Nordic Union – ‘Second Coming’

“You choose a bully as a president, the definition of incompetent” followed by “a looney tuney in the high command”. As subtle as a kick in the dick. The same goes for the album’s heaviest cut, ‘The Final War’, which gets its message across with a clenched fist, but even at their heaviest, Atkins and Martensson don’t forget the hooks. The world might be going to hell in a handcart, but at least the hooks and melodies are glorious! It’s not all darkness though. ‘New Life Begins’ offers up the hope that a new relationship brings,.‘Breathtaking’ seems to put its faith in the future generations: “Their guns are love not hate”. Even when the heartbreak appears on moments like ‘Outrun You’ and ‘The Best Thing I Never Had’, it’s set to infectious bursts of energy. Poor guy is pouring his heart out here, and all I want to do is sing and bounce… and on ‘Rock’s Still Rolling’, you will sing and bounce. It does what it says on the tin, but it also seems to tell the cautionary tale of someone who has been there and has the scars to prove it. ‘Second Coming’ is big on heavy, melodic riffs, soaring vocals, and identifiable subject matters. Erik Martensson handles all the guitar duties, four and six string, as well as keyboards, backing vocals, and production. Although still a sprightly young chap, both he and Atkins are old hands at this game. They know what’s required to capture someone’s attention (a memorable tune), and they play to their strengths.
