Review: Gotthard – 'Silver'

where did it all go wrong?”. No, it’s not original or ground-breaking, but who cares when it’s this good?.. and those backing harmonies at the end… oooft! ‘Silver’ has a great mix of softer moments and guitar-driven rockers like the crunching ‘Everything Inside’, or ‘Tequila Symphony No5’, and ‘My Oh My’, which all see Gotthard flexing their muscles. ‘Blame On Me’ is another, with it’s Blackmore-esque guitar breaks that will have you crossing everything possible that the man in black picks Gotthard to open this summer’s Rainbow tour. So many bands cite Led Zeppelin as an influence that Deep Purple are often overshadowed. As a massive Purple/Blackmore fan, it’s pleasing to hear these influences coming through on ‘Silver’. On the softer side, ‘Reason For This’ is classic power ballad material, as is ‘Only Love Is Real’. The acoustic ‘Not Fooling Everyone’ might be short, but leaves its mark, as it serves its purpose as a mid album breather. Fans of classic, melodic, and hard rock will lap ‘Silver’ up. 25 years and counting, Gotthard still have it.
