Live review: Suburban Legends / Offbeat Offensive – The Junction, Plymouth

Back once again, to my favourite Plymouth hostelry, but this time for a more personal gig, outside of the usual genre covered by DGM.

Tonight it is the turn of a band I first saw MANY years ago, wowing the crowd at Disneyland, California, where they are something of a house band. Tonight, though, Suburban Legends are bringing their infectious brand of Ska to a tiny Plymouth pub, something of a culture shock for all involved.

Knowing their pedigree, I anticipated a full house, but, disappointingly, the crowds hadn’t turned up, and as support band Offbeat Offensive from further down the South Coast in Portsmouth took to the stage (and as there were seven of them, completely filling it!) the venue was less than half full.

Somehow, the next thirty minutes were crammed with ten songs, or maybe eleven, or possibly twelve, or maybe it could have been twelve, but then they ran out of time for the official last song. However many it was, it was glorious chaos as they (and a contingent of fans) had the best time performing.

Ska is infectious music at the best of times, and this was music to make you smile, dance, and forget life’s troubles. In the chaos, I have no idea who was who on stage! I know that the guitarist was actually playing bass, so another guitarist stood in, who was also joined at one point by Suburban Legends guitarist Paul, and occasionally by the singer. I know that the brass section was tight and danced their socks off. I know that the rhythm section were almost completely hidden at the back and side of the stage, but ensured the madness around was kept to the most wonderful of beats.

Opening with “When We Were Young”, with its infectious chorus, their set absolutely flew by. Highlights – the tropical “Waiting For The Sun” and the more introspective “Shades Of Grey”.
A perfect way to raise the energy towards the end of a long work week and prepare those who had turned up for the headliner.

If the stage was fully for Offbeat Offensive, they were even more so for the Californians, and from the first note, singer Vince and horn blower Aaron were in the crowd and people’s faces with the biggest grins.

A read of the band’s history shows MANY lineup changes, but on stage, it seems like these guys have played together for a lifetime. The things that impress me most is the way they can almost read each other’s minds when one goes off script, which happens so often it almost becomes the script! They have the best time on stage, give it everything despite the disappointing numbers watching, and make it impossible for you not to have the best time too!

The band are famous for their Disney covers, with “You’ve Got a Friend In Me”, “Duck Tales” and “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” all featuring in the setlist and played with utter joy. Homegrown songs hit the spot too, though with “Just Be Happy”, “Dance Dance Dance”, “Hey DJ” and more presented with polish and constant movement. Between songs, the chat is humorous and free-flowing. One example being the detailed description of the local Co-op, as that was the only bit of Plymouth they had seen!

The glorious thing about the set, though, is the way in which the band makes that issue of a small audience a thing to remember in an entirely different way.

We get a dance circle (you know that thing at parties where you form a circle and each person goes in the middle and dances?). Yup, they somehow decided to do that on the spot! One guy from the audience found a new career as a mic stand for Aaron’s trumpet. People found themselves singing, dancing, posing for photographs, and in the most gloriously surreal scene I have ever encountered at a gig, becoming human pyrotechnics led by various members of the band.

Talking to the guys afterwards, they strongly believe that no matter how big or small the crowd, everyone deserves to see a show, and that a smaller gig just makes improvisation easier and more natural.

I left with the biggest smile.

Forget genres. Music should leave you with memories, and tonight could not have left me with more!
