Live Review: Ministry – SWG3 Glasgow

Wake up… take it in… exhale… REPEAT!” and as each line flashes up on the screens, fists are raised in unison.  The explosive vocal samples used urge “let us all unite”, and the crowd does indeed. A fantastic new track which has a ridiculous groove that gives way to an incredible thrash/death metal finale. After the opening salvo of new material, the band offer up ‘Punch In The Face’ before dipping into the ‘Rio Grande Blood’ album. The breakneck speed of ‘Senor Peligro’ sees a pit opening up and local hero ‘The Pit Troll’ is in attendance. Hard to miss, he’s about seven foot tall and built like a brick shithouse. Well known on the circuit to bands and punters alike, ‘The Pit Troll’ looks after everyone and makes sure that all are safe. Uncle Al points him out a few times and the look of horror on the faces of security as he comes over the barrier is priceless! Search ‘The Pit Troll’ on YouTube, and check out Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch getting him up on stage. ‘Rio Grande Blood’ continues with the brutal title-track, complete with George W Bush samples, and the groove of ‘Lies Lies Lies’. After that fades out, it’s back into the new album for ‘We’re Tired Of It’, ‘Wargasm’ and ‘Antifa’. Special mention needs to go to Derek Abrams, who puts in a masterclass performance on the skins. A lesson for any budding drummer on how to play at speed, but not lose any of the groove. He’s hard to see through the crowd, but Abrams certainly made his presence felt. Jourgensen jokes that as the crowd had to listen to the “new shit with politics“, then here is “some old shit with politics”. Straight into ‘Just One Fix’, and again Abrams is in control. Industrial metal at its very best and flashbacks a-plenty to 1992. How do you follow that up? With ‘NWO’ of course! If you are of a certain vintage, surely you must remember bustin’ a groove to this back in the day? A guaranteed floor filler at any rock club in the early 90’s, it was mind blowing then, and still is now. From here it’s one classic after another; ‘Thieves’, ‘So What’, and a stunning set closer in ‘Bad Blood’. It’s only when you hear Ministry in such a closed environment that you realise how influential Al Jourgensen actually is. With the release of ‘AmeriKKKant’, Al Jourgensen is still angry, still relevant, and still a huge influence. All current Ministry live dates available here.
