What are the origins of Vanilla Sugar, how long have you been playing?
I originally started writing music on a midi keyboard and iMac in Houston, TX. I wanted to get the songs in my head out and into my car’s speakers.
How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!
I was actually pretty nervous before the show. I’m always like that. But, once I hit the stage, I transform into a whole other person. It’s crazy how that happens. The show itself was amazing. Such a fun time!
What should people expect when they check the band/you out? How would you describe yourself?
People can expect an extremely high energy performance, with a light show to match. I am the kind of person who believes in putting on a full show for people; lights, music, stage props, the whole thing. The live show is so fun! I have a light wall behind me, along with spotlights and fog geysers. The music is a mix of EDM, Pop, and a hint of Metal.
The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?
To stand out, you have to authentically be yourself. There is no one else like the real you. For Vanilla Sugar – The music is just right; dark enough, heavy enough. You can get lost in it. I love that. You can interpret the lyrics any way you want, and apply it to your life. It’s very genre bending. There are a lot of road blocks on the path to success but you have to remember that this is YOUR dream and what YOU want. Push past it, and don’t give up. You can be successful as long as you put in the work. It’s not easy. A lot of people don’t want to put in the work.
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
I just released my new album, “She”. It is available to stream everywhere! I am fresh off a January US West Coast tour, and will be hitting the road again in September. Check out my latest music video and single on Youtube, or on Facebook.
What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?
I am actually very excited to announce that I will be opening a few shows with Julien – K and The Birthday Massacre at the end of this year. I can’t wait!
Who do you feel is the next band to break out?
I would like for Vanilla Sugar to be household name. 😉
What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?
My dad is a drummer and was playing gigs ever since I can remember. I always thought that was so cool. I started playing piano when I was 4 and picked up guitar when I was 12. I played my first show at my middle school talent show and knew from that moment that was what I wanted to do.
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
The last show I saw was Rammstein. SUCH A GOOD SHOW – their pyrotechnics are to die for. Incredible.
The album that you have in your album collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
Britney Spears – Oops!… I did it again – I love Britney!!
What are your plans for 2020?
I will be shooting and releasing a few more music videos, as well as touring from September – December. I can’t wait to be back on the road again!
