Introducing: DiipSilence

What are the origins of DiipSilence, how long have you been playing?

— Hi there, my name is DiipSilence, I’m a solo electronic artist-producer based in LA. I was jumping to the music industry four years ago. I graduated in the major of math while music was my biggest hobby. I remember during each summer vacation, I went to New York Dubspot school to learn DJ, electronic music productions with Ableton, this opens my mind, and I decide to pursue my career in the music industry. After graduation, I moved to LA to continue to learn Audio Engineering and started my career as a mixing engineer, film post sound designer, and sound editor. Working in the film industry also provides me skills in using foleys and sound effects to write music. Now I’m writing my own music and collaborating with different musicians as an independent artist-producer.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

— The first gig I got was during high school, I played guitar in front of my classmates. To be honest, I don’t quite remember how I performed, whether it was good or not, but I do remember the feeling that the audiences were happy, and we all enjoy the show. I’m not a talkative person, but I feel music is the only language that I can convey my ideas and emotion.

What should people expect when they check the band/you out? How would you describe yourself?

— I hope my music can let people see what I can see and feel what I can feel. I describe myself as a musician and sound designer, I usually will start my music by recording field ambience and sound effects, listening to nature, the urban area, also the animals. Then I’ll begin to the sound design process to make those recordings into unrecognizable electronic instruments. For example, in my single titled Galaxy, all the sounds were coming from Joshua National Park, I went there for a star watching trip, I remember the milky way, the massive stones, the cactus, and numerous Joshua trees. I recorded some ambience sound and foleys, this whole piece is for the memory of that scenery.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

— I think it’s the authenticity of the music. No matter how visually good a band is, the origin is still the music, an excellent musician would talk through their music because their music is genuine. I wish my music can speak to the audiences with all my heart.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

— I released an EP called “Reticent Path” at the beginning of 2020, it’s an acoustic six-song instrumental EP that has no lyric at all, that’s where the word “Reticent” came to be in the album title. Check it out here: http://smarturl.com/reticent_path

For now, my full-length album is under production, this will be a combination of lyric songs and instrumental tracks, I used lots of foley sounds and field recordings as well, please stay tuned!

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

— If I ever had a chance to open for Sigur Rós, that’ll be a dream comes true.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

— They may already break out lol, Rüfüs Du Sol.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

— I learned keyboard when I was in primary school and guitar in high school, never thinks I’ll pursue anything in the music industry. But like I said before, after taking classes at Dubspot, I feel I want to jump into the music industry. I think everything can be linked together, whether math, life, or music. The moment I decided the path, the rest of it is the execution, learn as much as I can to make it come true.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

— The last gig I attended as a fan was Yann Tiersen’s concert, I loved his music since “Amelie from Montmartre. ” I remember he put a tape machine on the stage and telling a story of it, that was a fantastic idea. His piano performance was really emotional, to see him on the stage already made me cry. He didn’t talk much, but I can feel his music spoke to me instead of any word, that’s the kind of musician I wanna be. Thanks, Yann Tiersen, to put on such a great show, the experience was unforgettable.

The album that you have in your album collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

— Ella Fitzgerald, Donny Hathaway, and Marilyn Manson.

What are your plans for 2020?

— The biggest thing is to get my full-length album released. As an independent artist-producer-engineer, I decided to every aspect by myself, maybe except mastering because I need another pair of ears to help. The lyrics, composing, production, singing, editing, mixing will be all finished by myself since working as a producer and mixing engineer for these years really helped in my skill set. I wish I can do a good job and bring out the authentic image that I want to express to the audiences.
