Battering your senses from Blackwood, Wales, Revolution Rabbit Deluxe sprung into life in 2019, and ever since then, the spiky post-punkers have hurled out a barrage of killer cuts that are not only massively appealing but also politically challenging. Discover RRD, below:
What are the origins of Revolution Rabbit Deluxe?
Rev Rabbit: Based in Blackwood, South Wales, Rev Rabbit originally formed the band in 2019. All our members were part of a mental health group that used music as therapy. Most of those members have gone but have been replaced by equally proficient musicians. We rescued Max (Lead Guitar) from an inflatable that had drifted from shore. She was singing “Where is My Mind?” by the Pixies at the time, so I forced her to learn lead guitar just to fit into the band. Lee (Drums) we found hitchhiking and Tim (Bass) we picked up on an eBay auction. I’m still waiting for my refund. There was no warranty.
Max: A previous member of our adventuring party invited me to join a quest they were on, almost 2 years ago. The quest was to assist with entertaining folks during our travels by weaving sagas of anguish and triumph in the face of adversity. I eventually met the NPC who originally assigned them the quest, who turned out to be a bard wearing a rabbit mask.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Revolution Rabbit Deluxe?
Rev Rabbit: Very few bands are riding the line between political commentary and entertaining melodic hooks. We are unique in that we are strident about our message and would love our music to challenge others. We are a mish-mash of all our influences plus our own unique interactions within the band. People should expect: Quirky, Shyness, and a healthy dose of angst from Rev Rabbit.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
Rev Rabbit: It was in a small café run by volunteers. No PA, vox went through a guitar amp. I was terrified. But, in all fairness, I am easily terrified, onstage and off. 🙂
Max: It was a fun time, despite the low numbers of patrons drinking in the tavern that night. At some point in the evening, a strange wizard communicated via the sending stone I had equipped and informed us of other upcoming quests in the surrounding areas that may need our assistance. I don’t remember us being paid any gold at the time, only beer.
Rev Rabbit: As you can guess, Max loves her D&D.
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
Rev Rabbit: We are working on our sixth album. The first single from it came out in December 2024. This is the first time we’ve gone to an independent studio outside of The Warren and we’re super pleased with the results. It will be available on all streaming platforms and is called Tim Gurner Says. It’s an angry little tune about the Aussie billionaire who told people living on the poverty line how they should be living. Grr!
Regarding a similar audience, which band at the minute do you feel that Revolution Rabbit Deluxe would be best suited to open for?
Rev Rabbit: Feeder, and The Pixies I feel would be a good match. We love both those bands.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
Rev Rabbit: Zac The Locust (great band in the vein of Bob Mould’s Sugar) and Dropping Like Flies (members of my old band 100,000 Bodybags, post punkers.) Red Joker are good alt-rockers too.
What frustrates you about the music business?
Rev Rabbit: Gatekeepers are my biggest gripe. I’m not good at socialising due to my Aspergers, so I flunk at making inroads. Also the devaluation of music as an art form. No other art form is expected to give away their art completely free. It’s a struggle to get a fiver off people for albums that took over a year to rehearse, record, and produce. It can be soul-destroying at times.
What are your first musical memories? And what lightbulb moment made you say “I want to do that”?
Rev Rabbit: Two for me. Watching a TV rerun of Help by the Beatles. They were singing “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl” and it really sparked my love of music and the emotions it can derive. Second was my first ever listen to “Are Friends Electric” by Numan. It made me realise that others were expressing similar thoughts and melodies to the ones that were in my head. I started learning to play after that to get my songs out of my head.
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
Rev Rabbit: The last big gig was The Pixies in Cardiff. Many small local gigs.
What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
Rev Rabbit: Inequality: local, national, international. The state of politics: especially the UK and USA. The apparent powerlessness of the people seems to be evermore evident.
Max: This strange, messed up world we live in. And the frailty of human existence.
The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
Rev Rabbit: The eponymous “The Duckworth Lewis Method.” 12 charmingly quaint songs about cricket, co-written by Neil Hanlon of The Divine Comedy, a secret passion. Some Roxy Music albums almost made the cut.
Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?
Rev Rabbit: Alt-rock is the obvious one but I also love rabbits, World War 2 tanks, and Newport County Football Club (for my sins.)
What new music did you enjoy in 2024?
Rev Rabbit: Some older Genesis album’ remixes (does that count?) The Pixies new album, and Feeder’s Red and Black. Smashing Pumpkins’ latest was good too.
What do the early stages of 2025 hold for you?
Rev Rabbit: Writing, rehearsing, and recording the rest of our upcoming album.
How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?
Rev Rabbit: We love contact with others. We are pretty active and always respond.
