Introducing: Mark Eden

Mark Eden is an Australian singer/songwriter currently living in Berlin. He also sings and writes for his beloved band Under The Tongue. Mark has three solo albums, as well as an EP and three albums with Under The Tongue, his fourth solo album ‘Things To Be’ is out now. Mark took some time out to answer some questions on his musical background and what to expect from his solo material.

How long have you been performing?

That’s an easy one 🙂

I grew up in Australia and my parents would have old school house parties. The kind where people were actually at your house. My dad would play 12 string acoustic guitar and people would join him and pretty soon everyone was dancing and having a blast.

That is where it all started for me I suppose you could say.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

My first gig was nerve-racking, exciting, scary, and awesome all at the same time. It was at my school fete. We played covers that everyone knew but it was still a crazy experience, one that I will not forget that easily. 😉

What should people expect when they check you out? How would you describe yourself?

If we are talking live, then, what you could expect is to forget about life for 90 minutes and singalong, chant and boogie to the songs as that is what they are there for. There are a few ballads thrown in the mix so there is also time to chill out. I would describe myself as a passionate performer who is more into getting the emotion across than the pitch-perfect cookie-cutter music that is very well presented in the main media.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what
ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to
 build a name?

You are right there are so many great new bands out there which is fantastic and the more the merrier I say. There is enough for everyone. I would say to stand out in today’s market you need to be consistent and release music faster than the major companies are doing with their old format. Be creative, active on social media, make videos, and keep going. Believe in what you are doing 100%

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

I’ve been working on my band’s new video; ‘Waterfall’ by Under The Tongue, which is really exciting. (check it out here)

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best
 suited to open for?

As a band, I think we would be a good fit to open up for Ben Harper.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

I wish I could give you a decisive answer but the fact is I really don’t know, sorry about that.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

My first musical memories would be of our house parties and my dad playing acoustic guitar. That was the light bulb moment when I saw everyone having such a great time. I think it was more of an unconscious light bulb moment than a conscious one, to be honest.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The last gig I attended as a fan was Puscifer in Belgium.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that
would surprise most people?

I have a few guilty pleasures you could say. Nickelback & Cat Stevens I suppose would be a bit of a surprise.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

The plan is to keep releasing music and making videos for each release. That in itself takes loads of time. I love making videos also because they are a different way to get crazy and creative. Through both of my projects, I think there is enough to keep me occupied for a lifetime 🙂

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with
you?

I am starting to be more active which is cool. People seem to be connecting to what I am doing which is really cool and puts a big smile on my face. You can find me here:
