Introducing: Davis and The Love

Davis & The Love is an evolution and continuation of two decades of music rolled into one genre-bending group. Reminiscent of both the past and forward-looking to the future, the history of this modern pop group is truly a tale of frontman Nate Davis’ musical career. There isn’t a style of music he has not mastered, from rock and hip hop to soulful pop and funk, all of which has been woven into this timeless feel-good collective of musicians and producers. Davis keeps all songwriting in-house by lending his lyricism and craft to each track. Here’s all you need to know about Davis & The Love straight from Nate himself.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

The band started out as just a concept after a buddy of mine, Jordan Hawley, sent over some music that he was producing at his house and it really resonated with the direction that I wanted to go musically. I had always envisioned putting together a band of like-minded people, and over the next year or so, I was able to find the right guys and we started writing more music and playing shows. Our first album came out in 2020, so we’re going on two years now.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

An adrenaline rush like no other! It’s really an incredible rush to play a show in front of people. And, the greatest compliment is when they are singing the hooks to your songs along with you by the second go-around even when they’ve never heard the song before. I think that I enjoy playing live even more than I do recording in the studio just because you can see an instant reaction from people.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

We call ourselves a hurricane of pop and soul, but it’s more than that because of all of the elements that we put into our music. There are elements of rock, blues, hip hop, 80’s pop, and Motown that influence our music. So, we’re really like an eclectic playlist of familiar classics mixed with the new pop soundscape. Almost as if Otis Redding, Hall and Oates, and Bruno Mars had a baby.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Well, certainly a good social media presence seems to help people these days and we try to be as active as we can to reach out to fans. But, I’m also old school in the sense that I want you to see it, hear it, and feel it in person. So, I really like to hit the road and get it in front of the most people as possible that way, as well. I also think that if you want longevity it helps to have something unique and a coherent style. Although our style blends a lot of elements, I think you know when it’s a Davis & The Love song from the passion and the storytelling.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We’ve got an incredible slate of new music coming out. Starting with our newest single, “Change the World”, and follow up music throughout the end of 2021 and into 2022.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Anderson Paak, Bruno Mars (or even Silk Sonic), Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, AJR, or 21 Pilots I think would be a good fit.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

It better be us!

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I always remember singing songs with my cousin when we would have family get-togethers. I started a band in high school and we played a couple of dances. I also won a rap contest at my high school at the school assembly. I guess I never shied away from the attention or the enjoyment that I got out of it, so I think I knew at an early age that this was what I wanted to do.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Leon Bridges in Atlanta

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

I really like Lykke Li…I’ll Follow Rivers is like my favorite song ever.

Although both 2020 and 2021 have been years to forget for many reasons, there has been some incredible music released; what would be your album of the last 18 months or so?

You gotta check out “Future Retro Love Story” by Davis & The Love!!!
