Interview: An Introduction to Leave It Blank

almost as big as their sound. The pop punk pros’ trademark punchy riffs and solid rock rhythms have paved the way for their wide appeal. The band are often recommended to fans of Green Day, so naturally I couldn’t have been more excited to hear what their new single, ‘Dairy Queen’, had in store! Leave it Blank certainly don’t disappoint. ‘Dairy Queen’ is the quintessential pop punk anthem. It is endlessly energetic, with an impressive, full sound. The drumming is, frankly, sublime! It’s consistently brilliant throughout, and brings a certain gravitas to catchy melodies and lyrics that you really must stand up and listen to. The notion of ‘A world that’s run by fear mandate’ is timely, that’s for sure. After all, when world leaders are waving their proverbial penises around with nuclear buttons and inciting fear within the masses, tomorrow is never guaranteed. Coupled with a sumptuous bassline, such lyrics really elevate the song to something that one might expect from a much more experienced band. Make sure you go and give it a listen. It’s so pretty damn impressive that I reached out to the band for a quick chat. If somebody had never heard of Leave It Blank, and you could only play them one song to get them hooked, which one would it be, and why? “Broken’ because it has the most impact out of all of our songs and really contains the energy and edge that we aim to achieve in our music.” This one is a few questions in one! ‘Dairy Queen’ is, of course, the song of the moment! I was just curious as to how you went about it in terms of the creative process. For instance, was anything about recording the single different from the way you’ve recorded past music?  And lastly, what is it about the song that you most enjoy? “Dairy Queen was a song that came together really quickly. From the initial line of “you can’t crucify the uninformed” the chorus was written in about two minutes, and the rest of the song came together fairly quickly after that. When it came to working on it as a band, it was just a case of figuring out the correct arrangement and a solid outro section. About an hour later we had the song complete.” What is it that you like about the music you make exactly? “What we love about our music is the energy within our songs, the lyrics, which always come from a very personal place, and the togetherness as a unit that we have. Also, the fact that we all do backing vocals and everyone has a microphone live, so we can just have a bit of a laugh and communicate with the crowd as a group, which is something you don’t get with too many other bands.” Is there a country (or even a city!) that is on your show bucket list? What is it, and why do you think you’d like to play there so much? “Playing in the US would be a great opportunity. It’s such a big milestone for a UK band to play over there and there really is a big pop punk scene wherever you go. To be specific, Philadelphia would be a great city to play just because it’s where the character in Dairy Queen is from, so it would give that song a bit of a homecoming. Also… Philly Cheese Steaks!” What advice would you give to bands that are on the same journey as you? “My advice to the bands along the same journey as us, would be to just keep playing and having fun with your music. As long as you love what you’re doing, no one can take that away from you, and with hard work and persistence you’ll always find an audience. If you’re just planning on getting famous from music, then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.” And finally, what’s next in the pipeline for Leave It Blank? What have you guys got planned? “More writing and gigging. We’re currently planning up heading to the studio to record another single as we speak so that will be exciting times. Other than that we’re just really trying to get our name out there and spread the Leave it Blank word.”  Thank you so much for your time guys. I really wish you all the best!
