“do you remember how you hurt your back, Mr Smythe…..POGOING??” Most of the bigger hits are played, ‘Always The Sun’ and ‘Strange Little Girl’ meet with roars of appreciation but it’s the classic ‘Golden Brown’ that gets the biggest cheer, was there ever a more beautiful song written about a more polarising subject. Similarly ‘Peaches’ is met with delighted smiles, a song that it is difficult to imagine being written in these hyper sensitive times. The guys troop off but not for long, nobody is leaving because we know what is missing. Jean-Jacques Burnel thrums his bass and the tone drops so low that my chest starts to vibrate, you can see people grimace in the audience and a slow grin spreads on JJ’s face. This is no accident, he stops it just before our ears burn and ‘No More Heroes’ rounds off the night. Once outside, its colder and damper than earlier but judging from the smiles, nobody cares. Top work fellas. All remaining tour dates can be found on The Stranglers official facebook page here.
