Review: Joanne Shaw Taylor- Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline

I know you’re sitting down, but you’re Scottish so I still expect you to be very noisy”. “Fooking right, hen!”, came the lone reply from the dark. Joanne Shaw Taylor is five albums into her career but was delighted to tell us that “Wild” is her first album to make it into the top 20! Proof, if needed, that she is indeed a rising star. She has a great rapport with her audience. Tonight, both she and the band appeared casual and very relaxed. Five of tonight’s songs were taken from her latest release, and were the ones most familiar to me, but soulful ballad “Tried, Tested & True” really stood out. It really showed off her gorgeous vocals and sublime playing. Joanne Shaw Taylor dedicated her Bowie cover “Wild Is The Wind” (my personal favourite on her latest album) to the great man. It’s the perfect platform for her voice, which has a Susan Tedeschi feel to it. As the evening drew to a close, they delivered the hefty, low-tuned, “Tied & Bound”. It’s a heavy-grooved beast, over which she churned out yet another impressive guitar solo. The evening wrapped with the encore, “Going Home”. The band rattled through an hour and forty minute set with absolute ease, and I loved every second of it. Both Aaron Keylock and Joanne Shaw Taylor are players that everyone should know about, surely to be mentioned alongside the greats in the future. Joe Bonamassa predicted that Joanne Shaw Taylor would be a superstar. After tonight, I would say both she and Keylock are well on their way! Review: Colin Plumb ]]>
