Review: Daughtry – 'Cage To Rattle'

“Another day, another battle, we all have a cage to rattle… this just might be the death of me..” ‘Heaven’ leads the album off with a slow-burning groove that bursts into life with some massive gospel-y hooks. I like that it’s not the traditional full-pelt album opener. Daughtry playing by their own rules. Not what you might have expected from Daughtry, but perhaps that was the plan. ‘Backbone’ is very Shinedown-esque, a comparison that could be made multiple times throughout ‘Cage To Rattle’. Led by a strong drum sound, it’s more pop than rock, but very catchy, regardless of the pigeonhole. ‘Deep End’ is very indicative of what you would hear on heavy rotation on American radio. It’s safe and won’t offend anyone; all the requirements that American radio need. Same with the ballad ‘As You Are’. Cell phones at the ready, folks. The guitar solo could have been louder in the mix, but then it would have ended up standard power ballad fare. ‘Back In Time’ begins with a delta blues vocal that hints the track is going down one path, only for it to change direction into a shuffling, jaunty little number. It’s not rock in the slightest, but by now you should not be expecting it to rock. ‘Stuff Of Legends’ does feature more guitar than most of the previous tracks combined, and it’s a welcome addition. The highlights on the album are ‘Gravity’ and ‘White Flag’. The former is mellow and thought provoking with a strong vocal performance from Daughtry himself, while the latter is the heaviest track on the album. If you enjoy the last few releases from Shinedown, this is right up your alley. Strong, empowering vocals with a call to arms from Chris Daughtry. ‘Cage To Rattle’ is a risky move from Daughtry. How do you gain a new audience without alienating your core fan-base? Only time will tell if it pays off, but Daughtry deserves credit for taking that risk.
