Live Review: Janet Gardner – Edinburgh

hates politics and politicians”, but some of the album tracks brought the attention usually reserved for political statements. ‘Let It Be Over’ deals with the epidemic of mass shootings in American schools, and how politicians don’t seem to have a middle ground where they can agree to disagree or at least reach a compromise. She mentions that one such tragedy took place very close to the school her kids attended, so if anyone has a reason to sound concerned, it is her. It’s a powerful moment, and one that features a scorching solo from James. Another powerful moment is when she tells the story behind ‘Candle’, and mentions that it was about her father passing and dealing with the loss. A solemn few minutes, with a respectful silence from the crowd as she details her father’s last few moments. As previously mentioned, the band are killer. Justin James we’ve covered already, but do check him out. Gemignani has an obvious talent as a guitar builder, but he’s also an accomplished bassist and can carry a tune, as he proves when he takes over vocal duties on a raucous cover of ‘Love Gun’. Then there is drummer Richie Rivera. Or as Gardner calls him “the smiliest drummer in the world”. Sweet baby Jesus, this guy can play! He’s a blur as he works his way round his kit, twirling drumsticks, playing standing up, and getting the crowd going. Everything you could expect in a drummer and more, in a nutshell; a showman. And yep, he doesn’t stop smiling at all! Janet Gardner completes her short visit to these shores in London on 28th May. For a good night out, pay a visit to Planet Janet. It comes recommended.
