Introducing: The Jailbirds

Canadian hard rock trio The Jailbirds have just dropped a brand-new single ‘I Will Move On’. Released via Golden Robot Records, ‘I Will Move On’ is taken from the band’s upcoming 5 track concept EP. We chatted with lead guitarist/vocalist Myke Penney to get the lowdown on The Jailbirds. Find out more, below.

DGM: What are the origins of the band? How long have you been playing together?

Myke: Liam and I have been playing music together for about ten years now, all through high school! We met John when we played with his old band back in 2019, and it just kind of worked out this way. We started The Jailbirds, playing rock music that we like to play, and that’s something that we continue to do to this day. We play what we feel is good.

DGM: How did you feel performing your first gig as a band? And how was it?

Myke: It was pretty chilled out as we had all played shows before this band, but it was still a little scary of course haha! It was at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, and it was a dream for us to play on that stage in our first show together as The Jailbirds.

DGM: What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourselves?

Myke: Our sound is very much a mixture of a wide variety of rock genres and eras. Like I said, we play what we think sounds good, and sometimes that means we make a really classic rock song. Maybe it turns out more modern sounding, whatever comes to mind in the moment really! If you like Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Alter Bridge, Monster Truck, or Rival Sons, you just may like The Jailbirds too!

DGM: The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent. In what ways do you feel a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Myke: That is something we are always thinking of. What sets us apart from most other bands at our level is our dedication to playing the best set that we can. We take our equipment and tonality very seriously; we work extensively on our voices and take care of ourselves in order to perform at our best. It really is our life’s work and we do our very best to deliver our all every time!

DGM: What are you working on at the moment that people can check out?

Myke: We just put out a single called ‘I Will Move On’! Check it out above.

DGM: What band out there at the moment do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Myke: Hmmm, certainly Rival Sons!! Our sounds are so complementary, and we have a lot of fans that tell us that. We agree! Hey Jay, if you’re reading this…

DGM: Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Myke: Crown Lands for sure. They are a rock duo from Oshawa, Canada, and they are friends of ours. They are so unique and awesome at the same time!
What great dudes too!

DGM: What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that!”

Myke: Ahhh, I remember it like it was yesterday! I was about 12, sitting in the back of my parents’ car on the way home from Tae-Kwon-Do. AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ made its way on to the radio, and for the first time ever I was completely captivated by rock!!! I didn’t even make it 15 seconds until I asked my parents “can I take guitar lessons?” They looked at each other like I was crazy, because nothing had ever led them to think that I’d be interested in such a thing! But once I’d heard it, I had to know how to make that sound…

DGM: What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Myke: The last show I went to was in September 2020, for a drive-in concert featuring Big Wreck!! Although drive-in shows aren’t the same, it was a very much needed event for myself and many others. It gave us all a taste, and that was satisfying enough for now while we wait to get back to normal! It was actually pretty cool because you could control your radio volume/EQ etc. How many times have you seen a live band and been able to do that?!

DGM: What is the album that you have in your collection or Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Myke: SO, by Peter Gabriel.

DGM: Although 2020 was a year to forget, there was some great music released; what would be your album of 2020?

Myke: Album of 2020 would definitely be The Dirty Nil’s F**k Art!!!

DGM: How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

Myke: We try to stay as active as possible, always coming up with new ways to engage! We have a ton of amazing content for our latest single, ‘I Will Move On’, so be sure to follow us so you can see!! Thanks so much for reading!!
