Introducing: Schultz

French industrial metal trio Schultz have just released their latest album; ‘Black Magic Party’, we caught up with founding member Franz (vocals and electronics) and guitarist Guitarfox to get some background on the band.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Franz: SCHULTZ is a solo project born in 2002 in South of France. It became a duo with the female performer VDREY during several years and a real band since 2018 with the arrival of Guitarfox (Guitar and vocals) and Sandy Dynamite (Live dance performance and vocals).

Guitarfox: Franz asked us to join him as a backing band for one gig at the Industrial Music Fest in Cannes (French Riviera) in 2017.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band?

Franz: It was a great moment for me because at this time I had stopped making music for 4 years. And it was the beginning of a new adventure, but at this moment we didn’t know it.

Guitarfox: It was meant to be a one shot, but it went pretty well… So Sandy and I are still in the project today.

And how was it?

Franz: Fucking good !!!!

Guitarfox: A first experience that you never forget, like your deflowering ! LOL

What should people expect when they check the band out?

Franz: To take a big slap in the face by 3 little Frenchies who make industrial metal.

Guitarfox: Evil music to fit your dark mood. I assure you will feel better after listening!

How would you describe Schultz?

Franz: We can resume our music like a crossover of lot of things from experimental to EBM, from Industrial to Punk and many other influences. Come on, don’t be afraid, it’s f***ing good !

Guitarfox: I would say Dark Electronics with metal guitars… But if you like short formulas, call it Industrial Voodoo ! LOL

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Franz: I think lot of things have been made in music for sure… But you need to find the thing that nobody made before to make the difference. Crossover is for sure the future of music… Lot of bands do it with less or more good results. You also need to propose something original and different each time you release new stuff. When a band gives me the impression of always listening to the same album, I stop listening after two tracks.

Guitarfox: Every new music must be the answer to something. Like Punk rock was the answer to stadium rock… The mainstreaming of music is always a danger to real creativity. If most people seems to love something, do the exact contrary of this thing ! Don’t be afraid, because this is how art lives and evolves.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Franz: We have just released our new album “Black Magic Party” just one year after our first album “Shot of Pain”, and our new video “Rats In The Sewers“; a few days before. To resume this new album: 10 kick ass tracks… 32 minutes of intensive pleasure !

Guitarfox: This is a good album. Check it out, it worth it !

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Franz: Every band as possible…We are afraid by nothing !

Guitarfox: Any of the Industrial metal legends who proceeded us… Ministry, KMFDM, Lords Of Acid, or My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult… Would be great !

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Franz: A french band named…SCHULTZ

Guitarfox: I heard about a band named… Oh wait, you just named them ! LOL

What are your first musical memories?

Franz: I have always listened music since I was a child, so it is hard to choose.

Guitarfox: My parents used to listen things of their age : Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, When I was a baby, I was fascinated by watching my father’s discs spinning… I damaged many of them. Sorry Daddy !

And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

Franz: When I bought my first guitar… (you need to know I’m a fucking bad guitar player), but it was a revelation ! I want to buy another one to make little things on stage on some tracks…if Guitarfox agree it of course ;-).

Guitarfox: So you will no longer need me ! LOL. When I was a child, I remember my father had an album by Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher “Against The Grain”, the cover was a close-up of his old dirty and worn Stratocaster, I thought it was so beautiful… I thought to myself that it was the instrument I want to play.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Franz: Rabia Sorda

Guitarfox: Mötley Crüe in Monaco, on their farewell tour. This was no more what I listened to then, but it was a teenage metalhead dream came true… Too late !

The album that you have in your album collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Franz: Les Swinkels , a french hip hop alcoholic band…

Guitarfox: I love listening to Erik Satie when it rains…

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

Guitarfox: Looking for gigs !

Franz: We are really impatient to play live again to present you this new album on stage.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

Franz: Everything is here Dude ! All the links in one link. And don’t forget to check our page schultzmusic.fr too
