Introducing: LunariaN

LunariaN are a four-piece experimental rock group from Jakarta, Indonesia. New album ‘Refined Anomalium’ is set to be released June 30th and the band filled in the blanks on our Introduction to LunariaN…

What are the origins of LunariaN, how long have you been playing together?

2010 is the year when LunariaN was really born after several changes in the even further past. We released an EP in 2011 called Experimental Thinking through Phoenixx Records in Manchester-UK, performing from stage to stage in Indonesia, before for some reason we had to pause in 2014. Last year we picked up the pace again, finished our first album which will be out this May, while releasing 1 song each month since January. Currently, we’re planning a small tour to promote it after its release. So It has been around 5.5 years if we don’t count the pause.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe LunariaN?

Expect rock music with eclectic surprises. We always say that you can try to imagine a mix of Bloc Party or SoaD’s guitar riffs, the eerie Radiohead’s Amnesiac ambiance, and Devin Townsend’s eccentricity into one, and then add some splash of European traditional music and underlying quirky electronic sound.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

We were nervous, that’s for sure, even though each of us brought our own experience, but it ended up well.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a name for themselves?

Originality is something quite rare these days, that’s what we think a band must have, and that’s what we maintain.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We’ve released 4 singles since January, there’s an upcoming album in June, and we also have some live videos on our Youtube, make sure to check it out 😊

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

Opening for System of a Down would feel like a dream.

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

We’re happily walking together with a local ambient-music trio named Singdawa, they have 4 songs in the catalogue right now and also aiming for an album. Definitely worth checking!

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Rivelino: Bon Iver live in Jakarta, an amazing, amazing show!

Ekky: It’s been a while, Anink and I watched Bon Jovi together, that was great.

Anink: Same, Bon Jovi’s concert in Jakarta. I have not been attending any concerts since then.

Willy: This might be a bit of a surprise but I don’t really enjoy going to a big concert.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

There are some, however, they boil down to how we cannot accept different opinions nowadays, pushing agendas towards each other, antagonizing people who have different opinions, or even people who just don’t care at all.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Anink: I tend to stay at one genre nowadays, hmm maybe people wouldn’t think I listen to My Chemical Romance but I do.

Rivelino: Probably Yann Tiersen’s works…

Willy: Since I have a kid, my playlist is full of nursery rhymes and children’s songs..

Ekky: I listen to Britpop a lot. Maybe Keane would surprise people that they’re on the list.

What new music have you been enjoying recently?

Regarding this, we can agree that St Vincent has been captivating us lately, her music is so creative and quite different than other female pop musicians. But she’s been in music for a while.

Philip Selway’s Strange Dance is the best album this year that’s under our radar so far.

What does 2023 hold for LunariaN?

Full of plans! As we’ve mentioned, an album will be out in June, and of course, we’ll be planning some showcase along with it. Apart from that, Rivelino is also working on his solo album.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?
