Introducing: Kingsfoil

Getting to know UK-based Kingsfoil, with founding member Tim Somerfield acting as tour guide:

What are the origins of Kingsfoil, how long have you been playing together?

We’ve all known each other through previous bands we’ve played in, but as Kingsfoil, we came together at the end of 2019. Our second gig was the final night of freedom before the big 2020 spring lockdown!

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Kingsfoil?

New wave classic rock with a decidedly funky twist. The core of our sets always have that funky element to them but we also have classic rock tracks, heavier tracks, and even bluesy numbers. There’s something for everyone!

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

At our first gig, we were billed as Tim Somerfield and Kingsfoil. Our lead singer Tim had already rewritten and recorded the tracks we were playing so it made sense to tie the band to his album launch at the time. Once established we quickly transitioned to just Kingsfoil and now only one or two of those original tracks still appear in the set.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Our EP “In The Hands of The King” has just dropped and you should definitely check out the matrix-inspired video to “Whips and Chains”

Regarding a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel Kingsfoil would be best suited to open for?

There’s a certain level of humor in our videos and I think fans of The Darkness would see a kindred spirit in us.

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

We played with Hollowkin in Southampton recently, they were great. I also can’t not say Mikey Ball and the Company!

What frustrates you about the music business?

It feels like it’s less about the live performance these days. There are so many other things to manage!

What are your first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

Tim: When I was 7 or 8 I had a friend who introduced me to Led Zeppelin. It blew my mind. Particularly due to the connection between fantasy and music. I had never heard a band like that before.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Tim: Def Leppard, I hadn’t seen them before somehow so felt like it was one that needed to happen. They were flawless!

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Tim: The Chronic by Dr Dre (everyone had that phase if they grew up in the 90s!)

Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?

Tim: Lord of the Rings! The hint is in the band name.

What new music have you been enjoying this year?

Tim: I thought Judas Priest’s new album earlier this year was excellent for a band who have been around so long.

What do the closing stages of 2024 hold for Kingsfoil?

We’ll finish up the year with our EP launch. Then we’re looking to record a video for the final song on the EP before we get back in the studio to record some new music.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We are very active on Facebook, Instagram, and Patreon! You can find your way to those places via our website kingsfoil.co.uk
