Introducing: Emily Daccarett

For designer Emily Daccarett fashion and music can not be separated. She creates an immersive world of storytelling through music, film, and fashion. Trying to push the boundaries of her imagination through synth-pop. Think of Blondie and David Lynch having a baby in 2020 and that’s the direction her music takes. Here’s the lowdown on what to expect…

What are the origins of the band, and how long have you been playing together?

ED: I’m a fashion designer and from the start of my brand I made sure to incorporate music into the collections. This is how I met my producer, Peace Nistades. We worked on the music for the fashion film I had produced to be screened at my first runway show. We had an amazing time and have kept working together for each one of my collections since then.

When I took time off to work on my craft as a musician, I knew he was the perfect person to kick off this new adventure with. It’s not a typical band and this allows me to work with a lot of amazing musicians depending on shows or recordings. I do have my go-to guys for live gigs and we met in the Musicians Institute in LA. We were all friends before, so coming together was a blast.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

ED: It was intimidating. I had gotten used to being behind the scenes, so having all eyes on me was nerve-wracking. I was worried that people who associated my name with my fashion brand would find it confusing to also see me as a singer/songwriter. I constantly feel the need to evolve, and include more of myself and my passions into what I do. I haven’t stopped designing, but there are many things I don’t like about the fashion industry today.

What should people expect when they check you and the band out? How would you describe yourselves?

ED: I’m a dreamer and storyteller. I try to reflect that in my visuals and especially the music. I want to create a sort of escapism that people can interact with.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent. In what ways do you feel a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

ED: I think a strong identity is necessary and that’s certainly not anything new. However, coming from the Indie circuit it’s not something I see all the time. I think we get caught up in making it all about the music and forget we are entertainers. We need to remember our fans; what makes them excited, hopeful, eager, or surprised.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

ED: I released a new song back in February and have been working on fun visuals for my ep Cannibal and single Love Chain. Expect some cute filters for Instagram and stickers available on giphy. I have a few covers I worked on for my YouTube channel and a clothing line inspired by Cannibal.

What band out there currently do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

ED: Petit Meller; she is the embodiment of fashion and music.

Who do you feel will be the next artist or band to break out?

ED: Angela Aguilar.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that?”

ED: I have these flashbacks of being in a car seat and listening to Queen, and Tracy Chapman. When I listen to them now it’s incredibly calming. I feel like I’ve always had this special relationship with music – it feeds my being in a way I can’t explain. My mom put me in dance and choir classes when I was five, and that was the moment I knew: “this is what I have to do”. No matter what, I had to find a way to work in fashion and music.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

ED: Doja Cat in Anaheim

What is the album that you have in your collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

ED: Danzig.

What are your plans for 2020?

ED: I’m working on my new album! We are going back to our retro sound and deconstructing it.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

ED: I’m pretty active on social. I love connecting with people and it’s a fun way to do it.
