Introducing: Deliria

Deliria is an evocative post-black metal band from the San Francisco Bay Area, formed in 2017 by David Scanlon (DAWN OF OUROBOROS). Quickly joined by vocalist Adam Rupp (Kill the Messenger), the duo sought drummer Jared Klein (RIVERS OF NIHIL) to record their debut album, Nausea. A fundamental critique of consciousness, the band crafts ordinary life in endogenous melancholia. Here is David with an introduction to Deliria:

What are the origins of Deliria, how long have you been playing together?

We started in 2017 as a studio project with Adam and I doing the Nausea album, and in 2018 we started rehearsing and became a live band.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Deliria?

We infuse a post black metal sound with gothic rock guitars. Haunting arpeggios of clean, chorus laden melodies over the top of some simple structures and a doomy approach. Adam brings his vocal intensity and creates a really unique sound. That’s important to us, we don’t want to sound like other bands.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

It was great, one of my favorite shows that we’ve played. Ion asked us to play their album release show with Black Fucking Cancer and Dearth at Thee Parkside. To be honest, we weren’t even sure if we could pull it off. Nick had been drumming for only about 2 or 3 weeks at that point, and some of the rehearsals were rough. Jade came in prepared and helped us glue everything together. Nick and I ran the set probably a dozen times the night before. And then we all really connected on stage for the first time and achieved our goals together. We became a band that night. It was a great feeling, and amazing night. The sound at Thee Parkside is by far the best in the SF area.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We have just released our second full length album, Phantasm. It is available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats, and brings us to some darker realms than we have explored in the past.

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

Good question, I think we would be a good fit with Tribulation.

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

Woods Witch. We really loved playing with them last year. They are great humans and have the best attitudes. Hopefully we can team up again soon.

What frustrates you about the music business?

A lot. All of the social media and background takes you from what you wanted to do in the first place, make music.

What are your first musical memories?

Seeing a Michael Jackson concert on TV. It was 1993 or 1994 and I just lost my mind and became obsessed.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

Candlemass. One of my favorite bands, and I missed them last time. Nothing was gonna keep me from seeing this one. It was great, I was doom dancing.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

None. You won’t find me at any protests. I live in defiance of what is delivered to me.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Motorama – Alps. One of the best and never gets old.

Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?

Snakes. I have two of them.

What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

Twin Tribes – Pendulum. I’ve been jamming it. The new Demoncy hits. My Dying Bride too. And there’s a new Kvaen album coming out soon.

What does 2024 hold for Deliria?

We will be playing some more shows this summer, and work on writing for the next one. Nothing too glamorous for us.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We’ll always reply and engage with you. We are on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and Bandcamp. Please give us a follow.

Thanks for having us, cheers!
