Introducing: Black Sites

Chicago-based trio Black Sites fuse together aspects of old-school metal and 80s thrash with progressive and melodic styles. The band released their fourth full-length album The Promised Land? on September 6th, 2024. Black Sites’ frontman Mark Sugar talks us through the origins of the band:

What are the origins of Black Sites?

Back in 2016, my previous band had split up, and I found my musical interests shifting a little. I wanted to do something a little more progressive and song-based, while also bringing in some influence from bands I loved growing up, and modernizing it somewhat. Soon enough, I had a pile of songs and was recording them with our original drummer Chris Avgerin. 8 years and multiple lineup changes later, here we are.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Black Sites?

I’ve seen us described as “progressive-ish metal,” and that seems accurate. You can expect to hear meaty riffs, memorable songs, and top-notch musicianship in general.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

The very first Black Sites show took place in a bar, surrounded by good friends and good bands. I remember it being a low-pressure evening, and a very fun time.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Funny you should ask! We just finished a new record entitled “The Promised Land?”. I’m personally very proud of the work we did on this record, and consider it our best work so far.

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

Obviously, the correct answer is Metallica. Not because we sound particularly like them, but because their audience is huge. With that many people in the crowd, at least some of them are bound to enjoy us. The odds are in our favor!

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

The Night Eternale’s “Fatale” is a fantastic record, as is Final Gasp’s “Mourning Moon.” Both bands have the rare ability to write actual songs, and I hope good things happen for them.

What frustrates you about the music business?

It seems that music itself has been devalued to the extent that it’s not really a functional ‘business’ anymore. It’s increasingly hard for most bands to break even on records or touring, and the amount of income generated by streaming services is inconsequential. I’m clearly not doing this for the money, but the current business model is not sustainable.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I grew up in a very musical household, so most of my early memories involve music somehow. I joined a band with some friends when I was 14, and while I had no intention of becoming a professional musician, I got hooked very quickly.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The Legions of Metal Fest in Chicago.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

I’m pretty concerned about far-right/fascist ideals making a comeback, not just in the U.S. but globally. Anyone familiar with world history knows that this will not end well.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

I don’t know what would even surprise people at this point. Motley Crue? Tori Amos? Ol’ Dirty Bastard? It’s all in there.

Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?

Good music, ‘80s Action movies, decent BBQ.

What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

Aside from the two bands mentioned above, I also really like Borknagar – Fall, Henrik Palm – Nerd Icon, Black Sabbath’s Anno Domini box set, and probably a bunch of other records I’m forgetting.

What does the remainder of 2024 hold for Black Sites?

Believe it or not, I am already working on the next Black Sites album. My other band Bear Mace also just finished a record, although that will probably be a 2025 release.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

I wouldn’t say we’re super active on the socials, but anyone who contacts the band will receive a response. You can find us at:
