Review: The Dust Coda – ‘Early Days – Raw & Unplugged’

Doing exactly what it says on the tin, ‘Early Days – Raw & Unplugged’ is just that: the early days of hotly-tipped London rockers The Dust Coda, raw & unplugged. Four acoustic tracks from writing sessions for the 2017 self-titled debut album, that have never seen the light of day, until now. The band say it best themselves – “We had written the songs and started demoing them in between drinking sessions and strangely kind of forgot about them”.

Bands can’t afford to go into hiding during these batshit crazy times, so with every musician and their dog strapping on acoustic guitars in front of a webcam, the time is right for the band to blow the dust off these gems and keep a connection going between themselves and their fans. Four tracks to send you into a blissful state. Four tracks perfect for that end-of-night comedown period, be your drug of choice herbal, alcoholic, classic Irn Bru or blue Smarties.

With its gentle acoustic picking, ‘Alone With The Notes’ get’s the EP off to a fine start. John Drake’s vocals are perfectly suited to this organic approach, and, at times, one’s mind might drift to thinking of a less nasally, whiny ‘Bob Dylan on ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’. The same authoritative, almost spoken word-like approach. ‘Bourbon Pouring’ keeps it low-key, and features some beautiful guitar melodies. Drake, again, excels, and if you are still mourning Phil Campbell leaving The Temperance Movement, then this (and closing track ‘Sigh Inside’) should keep your pecker up for a while. The tempo increases on ‘Love Sick’, which has a bit of a ‘Bron-Y-Aur Stomp’ feel to it, and alright alright alright, there could even be some bongo action in there? Guitarist Adam Mackie gets the chance to plug in on a thrilling track, and he doesn’t waste it.
