Review: Dead Man’s Whiskey – ‘Under The Gun (Reloaded)’

”Big man, spray tan, balled up fist instead of a hand, and he wants to start a fight”, before adding, ”But I’m gonna finish it”. Rogers has a strong, gruff voice. Not raspy gruff, but a ‘just woke up, where the hell am I’ gruff! On that subject, ‘Hoe Street’ is a another observation that many of us might identify with, regardless of gender. ”Wake up at 2am and out your bed I slink, still wearing last night’s socks and feeling last night’s drink”. Guilty as charged. Dead Man’s Whiskey go big on the riffs. Rogers is able to go walkabout with some long solos as Elliott D’Alvarez on rhythm guitar has his back. The rhythm guitarist; the unsung hero of so many bands (Brad Whitford, we salute you sir). The classic-metal tinged ‘War Machine’ is awash with huge guitar hooks, gang vocals, and the pounding work from the backbone of the band; James Titley on bass and drummer Charlie Gray. A fantastic combination of buzzsaw riffs and a sleazy guitar tone. The band slow it down a tad on ‘Make You Proud’. With a title like that, it was always going to be ballad-like. Think Shinedown covering Skynyrd’s ‘Simple Man’ and you’re almost there. A moment for the crowd to catch their collective breaths and phones to light up the room. You mentioned extra tracks, fatboy… I hear you ask. Yep, ‘Raising Hell’ is a crunching slab of modern hard rock (with a killer throbbing vibe running through it), while the single ‘Racing Bullet’ has the UFO patented twin guitar attack front and centre. Magic darts indeed. Fans of classic hard rock will lap this bad boy up. Both bonus tracks were produced by Killit guitarist Niro Knox, another British band worth checking out. It’s easy to be cynical about re-issuing an album, but Dead Man’s Whiskey have gone the extra mile to give this one more bang for your buck. If you need any more reasons to part with your cash, other than those listed above, how about keeping the wheels turning for another fine young British band?
