“The good thing about playing ‘Drunk Enough To Dance’ in its entirety ladies and gentlemen, is this early in the show you get to hear the best song ever!”…before launching into the unmistakable intro of ‘Girl All The Bad Guys Want”. The crowd does indeed go wild. Unlike some bands who rely soooo much on audience participation that at times a gig resembles a mass karaoke session, here Reddick handles most of the vocals himself, bringing in the crowd at certain places. The noise from the crowd is deafening, and the end result is exactly what a live recording should be – fast and loose. Displaying a sense of humour, and an inability to take themselves too seriously, Bowling For Soup are the perfect band for the current climate. They set out to give their fans a night to remember, as well as the chance to leave the outside world firmly at the door. ‘On and On (About You)’ still manages to raise a smile years after it first appeared. Played at a frenetic pace, propelled forward by the immense drumming from Gary Wiseman, it perfectly captures what a live rock show is all about. Likewise, on ‘Life After Lisa’ you can almost sense the crowd bouncing as one…”All I gotta say, is there ain’t no fucking way, that you’re getting me to say… sorry!”…love it! Let’s be honest, who can’t identify with this one in one form or another?! As for ‘Running From Your Dad’… well, we’ve all been there at some point too, no? If ‘Drunk Enough To Dance’ on its own isn’t enough, then there is many more moments to tickle your funnybone. Best summed up by the sheer over-the-top-ness of ‘Today Is Gonna Be A Great Day’, also known as the theme tune to ‘Phineas And Ferb’, short, sharp and sweet! Then there is set closer ‘1985’, which should see a smile breaking out on the faces of the most grizzled cynics out there. Featuring audience participation to end all audience participation, it’s the perfect way to end the best example of what other bands should do when considering recording a live album. Don’t mess with what you have in the can, a live gig is usually chaotic, don’t water it down to the point that it’s too bland. Press record and stand back, if it sounds rough in places, then we know it’s real. If it’s too clean, it ain’t real. This is a fun, memorable live recording, nothing else to add to that statement, apart from to say that ‘Older, Fatter, Still The Greatest Ever – Live From Brixton’ is available January 18th.
