Review: Less Than Jake – 'Sound The Alarm'

These too heavy times/No matter the weather /I’ll never waver’. ‘Bomb Drop’ is, without doubt, the standout track of the album. Instrumentally, the blend of saxophone and trombone is simply delightful, and Fiorello’s drum work here is insane. As an avid fan of his (and as an amateur drummer myself), it’s a joy to hear some of his best work in years. The song is inherently ska punk, with a trademark immediacy, both instrumentally and lyrically. An emphasis on the here and now is made prevalent in lyrics like “You can’t keep waiting for the bomb to drop/And hope everything just stops/And falls in place while dark clouds roll away”. The ska legends that are Less Than Jake have, for the entirety of their musical career, endlessly, and relentlessly, produced incredible releases. ‘Sound The Alarm’, their Pure Noise Records debut, is no different! Each of the tracks, barely contained within this monstrous EP, are impeccable. The Less Than Jake boys have landed themselves a slot at Slam Dunk Festival later this year, and I, for one, plan to spend a little time at the Fireball stage in hopes of hearing this one! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for another 25 years, eh? ‘Sound The Alarm’ is available from 3rd February via Pure Noise Records, and iTunes Review: Amy Jefferies.]]>
