Review: Duff McKagan – ‘Tenderness’

“Oh, shit, have you heard about Parkland? Yeah, it happened once again, another school another fucking heartbreak”. It’s not an album to slip on if you are feeling a bit down, but as he sings on the title-track “a little tenderness is what we need”. The “C” word? Well that depends on how you define Country music. A steel guitar twangs here and there, as does a fiddle, but never too overpowering. ‘Tenderness’ has more in common with artists like The Rolling Stones than it does with the god-awful “Bro Country” that currently fills stadiums in America. Listen to the uptempo ‘Chip Away’ without thinking of The Stones, nope, can’t be done. McKagan doesn’t have what you might call a traditional lead singers voice, it’s rough, battle-scarred and lived-in. All of which gives the album an authentic air. The work of Shooter Jennings and his amazing band enhances McKagan’s storytelling, the playing is restrained and low-key, but oh so effective. ‘Tenderness’ is an emotional (and in places, spiritual) piece of work, an album that slots in perfectly alongside The Band, Little Feat, Dylan, The Stones and Gram Parsons.
