Powerful UK heavy rockers, Pyrofox, are set to rise with the release of their enthralling new single and video, Colourblind, out now. Get to know Pyrofox, below:
What are the origins of the band, how long have Pyrofox been playing together?
Pyrofox formed in April 2023, from the remnants of Black Tree Vultures, which disbanded in early 2023. Ben and Aaron (instrumentalists of Black Tree Vultures), decided to continue playing music together and set out to start a new reinvigorated project, finding Tegen to join as vocalist, pushing the sound of the band into a completely new direction. Pyrofox have been playing together for over a year now, but Ben and Aaron have played music for nearly three years together. The band hails from Bournemouth, a town renowned for a bustling nightlife and vibrant music/gigging scene as well as selling over 750,000 ice creams every year on its seafront – even more reason to come down and see us play!
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Pyrofox?
We have a very recognisable sound. We are high-energy, riffing rock and roll! Our energy is definitely a highlight of ours, with fans always commenting that this is what sets us apart. We are also slightly unique in that we are playing British Hard Rock/Metal with a female vocalist. There do not seem to be many recognised bands doing this at the moment in the UK, being much more prevalent in America – your Halestorm, Evanescence, Pretty Reckless, etc. This is definitely thanks to our powerhouse vocalist, Tegen, who is capable of singing above and beyond the rip-roaring riffage that the guys lay down underneath.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
It was great fun! We were playing at the Bear Cave, in Bournemouth, last July, supporting a Rage Against the Machine tribute band. It was busy and everybody went wild for us – fun times.
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
We have just released our brand-new track “Colourblind”, with a great video, courtesy of Nana Giffin Productions. We are incredibly proud of both the track and video! We also have lots of gigs coming up throughout the summer which we are always working on, to bring the best show we can. You can find these on our website and socials. Next up, we will be getting back into the studio to record another single – you’ll just have to wait and see which one though!
Regarding a similar audience, which band at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?
We will literally support anyone and everyone – we are all about having a great time and meeting similar minded, hardworking musicians, and getting a chance to hang out with these people. We would love to support a big act, namely Alter Bridge, they are musical Gods! But equally, we would support any fellow up-and-coming act, if we can help propel them and vice-versa, then that is a fantastic thing.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
We have always been impressed with Florence Black, they are awesome, and a powerhouse trio! They are well on their way to already breaking out though!
What frustrates you about the music business?
We are not really sure that anything truly frustrates us, after all, we are getting to do something we truly love with our music. That being said, the rivalry between some styles of shows is a little bit petty – music is objective at the end of the day and nobody is really “better” than anyone else – we are all about hanging out and having a great time! Some shows promote this rivalry and discord, which is not okay.
What are your first musical memories? And what lightbulb moment made you say “I want to do that”?
This is a tough one to answer as a band, as we all will have different answers to this, but we can all say that the first time playing music with other people and gelling is truly euphoric, and very little can beat that satisfying feeling!
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
I think the last of us who attended a show was Ben, and he saw Queens of the Stone Age play in the BIC, Bournemouth – it looks like it was a mental show. We do like to try to see some shows altogether, as a band and we are all going to see the Bullet For My Valentine X Trivium co-headline tour next January! This will be insane as they are playing The Poison and Ascendency 20th anniversary shows – both albums we all grew up on and adored!
What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
Currently, it just seems like there are more and more social injustices and issues to add to the already long list. We are particularly passionate about gender equality, and climate change. We are actively trying to lessen our impact on the environment, looking into sustainable merch options. This is a place where we believe all bands could do something to help, using sustainable merchandise products, for example, eco-friendly materials or low-impact materials to create their merch range.
The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
We all listen to a huge range of music. It might surprise a lot to find out Tegen sings in an ABBA tribute band as part of her day job, so there is a lot of ABBA on her playlists! Aaron is a secret Swifty, and can be heard singing this whilst at work… Ben’s would probably be Belinda Carlise – banger!
Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?
Ben and Aaron are very keen Lord of the Rings fans, perhaps obsessively so!
What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
There have been so many we have loved across the band. The new Bring the Horizon album is great and the production on that is nuts. We have enjoyed Falling in Reverse’s experimental stuff recently. There is a band from Australia, who Ben raves about and their album is also very good – Mammal. Ben has also really been into Kid Kapichi’s new music, after seeing them play at the end of last year.
What does 2024 hold for Pyrofox?
We have shows booked up now until the end of the year, all over the country. You can find details of these on our socials. We will be also getting back in the studio to record our next single, as alluded to earlier.
How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?
We are very active on socials, particularly Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. We have a private fan group on Facebook, so if you like what you are hearing, feel free to join at “The Pyrofox Pack” for exclusive behind-the-scenes fun!
